Got a call from my surgeon's secretary yesterday afternoon saying surgery would have to be delayed until next week because my bloods were down. I had just got myself psyched up for admission Tuesday night for op on Wednesday so it was a bit of a downer to be honest. Anyway once i thought about it i realised i need to be as strong as possible for the operation and as everything has gone so well so far it is only a minor setback and at least they dont just press on regardless. Bloods again this Thursday and surgery provisionally rebooked for next Thursday so fingers crossed! The good news is we have just bought a bright orange VW T25 Camper Van (searching for one has been my focus for the last few weeks) and my husband is picking it up on Friday so i get to play in it sooner than i thought!!!

Hi MB! Sorry to hear about your delay, but you understand it's for the right reasons. It will give you a better chance of a good recovery. Just wanted to send you cyberhugs (((xxx))) and say enjoy playing in the new campervan. My best ever car was a VW Beetle (1969 reg) that I drove till it dropped to bits. What is it about VWs that inspires such love?
Thankyou Wendy. The camper van is just another thing to inspire me to a full recovery. I've always wanted one and when i was diagnosed we decided to stop dreaming about it and buy one!!! We looked at a few complete wrecks before finding this one and as soon as i saw her i knew she was meant to be mine. I mean ours. Hee hee.x
Hi sorry about your setback, but enjoy your beautiful camper van even if it's just standing back and admiring it for the time. Love and best wishes x G x
Already done Gwyn. She is called 'Dorothy'. She is my 'Over the Rainbow' van with blue skies ahead for me!!! Also she will be my second home once i'm mobile after my op and as everyone knows there's no place like home! Hee hee a bit cheesy i know but what the heck!xx
It seems you and my wife Angie have 'enjoyed' a similar experience. She was diagnosed Dec 10th so I guess your Christmas was about as happy as ours!
Your delay must be disappointing, but as you say, the stronger you are when the surgery takes place, the better. It seems Angie may have to wait a while longer too. She sees the Oncologist on Thursday so we'll find out for sure then.
You have the right attitude with the VW. Sounds like fun.
We both wish you a successful op and many happy years in the campervan.
I'm intrigued to understand the links to the Wizard of Oz. Your photo reminded me of the character Dorothy and now you have a camper van of the same name. I hope you're going to watch the film which is just about out now. Many years ago I played the Straw Man in an amateur performance.
Please don't see the postponed op as a disappointment. It will give you a chance to really enjoy receiving the new van and when you do get into hospital you'll be able to think about it and plan all your wonderful trips in it. You'll probably not be able to move around too much for the first week or so and it may be out of bounds for a couple of weeks.
I hope you feel a bit cheered up and next week's op goes according to plan. It really is for the best.
The Wizard of Oz fixation is just because i am a Judy Garland fan but particularly of her rendition of Somewhere over the Rainbow. Nobody else sings it quite like her. I have a skirt i made a few years ago with fabric that is sepia toned background with different head shot poses of Judy in the film singing the song with rainbows above her head. Its lovely fabric and i sort of earned a Dorothy nickname because of it. My profile pic you refer to is me in a homemade Dorothy costume at a film themed party last year! I don't usually like my photo but i really like that one. So you played the scarecrow in a Wizard of Oz production? I bet that was fun!
Thankyou for your encouragement Annie i already feel much happier and have just put the postponement down to one of those things and like you say it gives me chance to enjoy the van before going into hospital. I know i wont be up to going anywhere for a while after the op but when i am up and about i can sit in her in our back garden with a cup of tea and plan our adventures!!!
Sorry to hear that your surgery was delayed but you do need to be as strong as possible for it.
I'm pleased that you have something that's fun to look forward to on Friday. Just think of all of the lovely places that you'll be able to go to in the summer in it.
I'll keep everything crossed that all will be well for you for surgery for next week.
Big hug
Zannah x
Ps I found that wind after the surgery was a bit of an issue. I took peppermint tea bags in with me and found that they helped to ease the discomfort.
I bought some more peppermint tea on Monday in preparation as a few people have said the same!
Thanks for the hug i am really looking forward to being able to get out and about in the van in the Summer.
Excited for Friday!!x
Hi MB
So sorry you've had to put up with a delay - very frustrating but you probably won't even remember it in a few months' time.
I am green with envy about Dorothy. I always wanted a VW Camper Van and have mugs, eggcups, calendars - you name it - in honour of campervans because my husband thinks it is horrific idea and so we can't have a real one. He likes his luxury too much and has only just about forgiven me for making him go on a canal boat holiday in France in 1999!
Do upload a picture of Dorothy when you can, and you never know, it might inspire Gwyn to an ode....
Hi Monique - aw bless what a shame your husband doesnt share your enthusiasm for the campervan. Ours isn't the super super cool bay window iconic vw that your mugs etc are likey to be of i'm afraid (as they were way out of our price range unless we bought a long term project!). Ours is next model on made from 1979 (the t25 or t3) which is still very cool! Once we realised there was no way we could afford a bay window version and started looking at the t25's i had my heart set on seeing something that made me go 'aw i want it' and thats what happened with Dorothy (after seeing a load of absolute wrecks)!! I will certainly try and put a picture on here when this weekend!!! Hee hee an ode to Dorothy sounds great!!!
Fingers crossed my blood tests tomorrow show improvement and i can be back home again following my op looking out of the window at Dorothy and planning the summer!!!
So very sorry to hear your op has ben cancelled but its best to hang on another week till you are ready for it re your bloods and keep those wonderful trips out in your amazing new camper van in mind as that will aid your recovery from your op .Love the name Dorothy !
I do so agree with Monique I can see a poem about 'Dorothy the camper van '.....over to Gwyn ....
Good for you MB. We use our tourer as a fourth bedroom when family come to stay. Used it over Christmas a few times and it is so cosy and warm. Think might make it a permanent move not much cleaning compared to a house either hee hee. Mind you at the moment him indoors is responsible for cleaning, cooking??????????? and all other household chores so he might see it as a plus.
Enjoy your van and dreams and good luck with the Operation.
I suspect there may be fights when our four grown up children return from the Dolomites in a few weeks time! The camper van is unlikely to be as cosy temperature wise as your tourer but the kids are seasoned campers and used to sharing small chalet bedrooms so it will be a home from home for them!! Hee hee moving into your tourer full time sounds like a plan!!
Thanks again for your good wishes for the op. It will happen when things are optimum. I think i have been well looked after up to now so i have to trust their judgement.
Ah great news about Dorothy, some friends of mine bought a VW camper recently and they like you said it was love at first sight when they saw her. She is bright orange and now sporting a new interior. Sorry that you have to wait for your surgery but you need to be tip top and then your recovery will be so much better.
Do you know whether your friends' camper is a bay window version or the T25 like ours? I do love the bay window ones but ours look fab in orange with an original old wooden interior. Will make new curtains and new covers (although the current ones are ok) when i get chance but for now a couple of crocheted rugs will be fine. Been searching online for accessories!! Surgery will be here before i know it and i'm sure i will be on the road to recovery by the time the lighter brighter days arrive!!!
I'm not sure which model she is but they are all so cool, something about them evokes scenes of sun and fun and freedom. May start looking myself..... xxx
