I'm very new to this!

having just been told I have a CA-125 of 83, I realise it is higher than it should be but can that be possible, does it definitely mean there is a tumour present? I feel in limbo until I see a consultant and I am scared!!!

Hi Jazz

It doesn't necessarily mean anything is seriously wrong. Usually a CA125 of over 35 is a marker that something isn't right, but it can be hormonal, an infection, drugs you've taken...other things besides OC. But...if there are other symptoms and scans have shown something suspicious, the Gynae/oncology teams use it as an extra check sometimes. Have a look on ovacome.org.uk It explains a lot about signs and symptoms, diagnosis and treatment. It also has fact sheets to explain lots of things. I hope you can find some help there. You can also use the search box on the blogs page and look up CA125 in there.

I hope you find what you're looking for but if not try to email or ring the Ovacome helpline on Monday.

Good luck

Love Wendy xx

Hi Jazz,

No it doesn't necessarily mean you have a tumour, a ca125 count of 35 or under is classed as normal so a count of 83 is not very high and this could also mean that it might be slightly high because you have endometriosis, so until you have had other tests done, nothing is certain... It is hard not to worry about this sending you best wishes love x G x

My onoclogist told me she had seen people with CA levels in the thousands who have not had OC.

If there's one thing we have learned on here it is to deal with what is, not what might be!

The thing to do to take control of this is to ensure you are thoroughly checked out, there's no telling whether there's anything there or not only from a ca125 test. You already have a consultant meeting so that's a great start.

Dear Jazz

I'm really sorry you've been worried in this way as nobody knows at the moment what the problem is. You don't mention what lead up to your having a CA125 test so it's a bit difficult to know how to help.

If your GP thinks there is a problem you will be seen very soon so I hope that's a comfort to you. That's really the only way you're going to clear this all up.

Meanwhile keep posting. Don't read too much on the internet until you know what you're dealing with. It will only make you even more worried.

Let us know how you get on.

Thank you everyone, it is so good to be able to share this with people! I've had endometriosis for years, have had a lot of surgery, a fallopian tube removed, I have it on my left urethra, and have a stent because of it. I had an ultrasound scan just before the blood test and the doc said she couldn't see anything, although she couldn't find the left ovary, which is side I have the stent and discomfort. I had bloating for about 5 weeks from Christmas Eve, my stent was checked, that was OK, so my doc decided to do the ultrasound scan and blood test. I mentioned OC to her, and with the bloating continuing, she decided to check it out. The bloating has stopped, but I still have tenderness in the left had side of my pelvis. I saw a new young doctor on Friday, and she was a bit alarmist, scowling at me, making it clear she was sending me to see a specialist to check for cancer! I just sat there in disbelief!

Hi Jazz,

I'd rather have an alarmist doctor than a dozy one, at least she is investigating and surely this is a good thing? all too often we read about people not being taken seriously, a doctor that is keen on saving lives has got to be a bonus.

When I was first diagnosed I went to my GP on the Friday (she happened to be new and only there on a Friday) by Monday I was at the hospital... her quick action saved my life. Best wishes love x G x

You are right Gwyn, I guess I just wasn't expecting her direct approach. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I am very scared about what the outcome might be. I'm sorry everyone as I appreciate you all have your experiences. I lost a dear friend to OC last May, so it petrifies me! God bless you all Love Janxxxx

Good luck Xhelp! I hope you receive good news. I have had an ultrasound scan, and nothing showed up, I guess they need to explore every avenue whilst making a diagnosis!
