Hi Fluffycloud. I was told by chemo unit not to take paracetamol on regular basis as it can mask temperature spikes. I have a cold at the moment and they told me to take temperature and if it was ok I could take them but to always check temperature first. Phone chemo unit and ask its better to be safe than sorry.

Thank you so much for your help and i have consulted my onc nurse and she has advised me to take regular doses of ibuprofen so hopefully this will sort it out, feel like i have been marathon running all night! Pam

Check with your Dr, but I would favour ibuprofen (anti-inflammatory). If you want something effective and herbal 'devil's claw' got me through loads of tendonitis and joint pain. My onc was happy about me taking it, but we are all different, so do check.

Thanks i have just spoken to my onc nurse and she suggested anti-inflammatory, i would normally shrug this off but it kept me awake all night and i do not see the point of putting up with it when there are other things i want to get on and do,Pam x

Goodness. I have a different experience.

My oncologist had the clinic give me piles of paracetomol after each chemo session - as is the practice there - and I was urged to take it. I did a little and there were no ill-effects however I am notoriously bad at swallowing pills and things and ended up not taking the paracetomol as it was making me feel sick even crushed up in apple puree.

I really only had pains on the second day after the chemo and i have a high pain threshold so was able to put up with it.

But what I am really saying is I don't think it will harm you if you take it.

Just my experience.

Best wishes,

Kathleen :)

Thank you for your reply, i did have these pains slightly after my cheme session but this time they have been really bad, feel like i have been marthon running all night, i have spoken to the onc nurse and she has said to take regular doses of ibprofen not paracetamol so i will try that as i hate to feel restricted in any way! I did get in touch with the onc nurse and she suggested anti inflamatories which i have started to take and they certainlu do help. Ithink when you first start on chemo you do not know what to expect and want to double check everything, i am not normally a pill taker so i was not really sure what to do. Pam thanks

Dear Pam

I'm so sorry to hear you've got joint pain as well as everything else. I think you're right to take Ibroprofen because you don't have to suffer any more than absolutely necessary. I think it's worth keeping a daily journal of how you feel. It might help next time to anticipate the side-effects of the chemotherapy. Someone did tell me that painkillers only work when taken regularly over a 24 hour period rather than when we experience pain. If Ibroprofen isn't working please go back to your oncology nurse to see if there's anything else he/she can suggest.

Hopefully you'll feel more comfortable very soon. xxxxxx

much love Annie

Thank you for your reply it is so reassuring to know that you you can get some good advice from ladies in the same boat so to speak. Love Pamx

Hi Pam,

I would go with the advice of you oncology team, you can't go wrong then, saying that I had agonising pains throughout both lines of chemo and didn't take anything, but I have got a high threshold of pain, and was very restricted in what I could do.

Annie is right that pain killers work better when took on a regular basis rather than now and again... best wishes x G x

Thank you for your reply i spoke to the onc team and they advised me to take ibprofen i am not usually a pill popper i prefer for things to sort there selves out and find it quite frustrating when i cannot do what i want to do, but i now know i need to listen to what my bodies telling me to do instead of trying to rush around like i used to.Love Pam

Hi Pam,

I used to feel exactly as you do , as if I'd run a marathon . It usually started on day 4 or 5 and lasted 2-3 days. Once I could see the pattern I took ibuprofen regularly & waited for it to pass. It always feels more manageable if you see a pattern and an end. Just to let you know no 5 was worse than ever for me so i dreaded 6, but in the end it was fine.

Good luck

Hi Carol, have to say i feel a lot better in the muscle and joint pain department thanks to Ibroprofen, which i have been taking regularly, you are right there is definetely a pattern to the after effects of the chemo, like a lot of ladies on this site i usually feel quite invigorated for 2 days after the chemo and then the muscle ache begins, by day4 i start to feel really tired and quite fuzzy headed then i pick right up again and feel almost back to normal just have to rest a bit more often then usual which i am sure we all find frustrating. Thanks Pam xx

hi pam,

I had severe pain after my 1st chemo and took both paracetamol and ibubrofen and kept an eye on my temp and general well being. I suffered over night and didnt ring anyone till morning as didnt want to be a pest. Specialist nurse very helpful with suggestions of pain killers etc. On the positive side I didnt get it on my 2nd session and not had it since (now on 5th). You may find as time goes on you dont get it as badly and it will stop totally.

Fingers crossed

Hi Lorrainex, Yes your quite right ibruprofen certainly knocks it on the head and i know what you mean about not wanting to be a pest, but hey when this is all new to you you become so unsure of things, but chemo seems to follow a pattern of symptoms on certain days so i shall be more than ready for it next time. Love Pam
