Today I went for my Pre-op assessment. It all seemed to go ok but now Im feeling a bit nervous as I know the next time I go to the hospital it will be my operation day. Im having a TAH and SBO ( In other words they are taking the lot away). Any tips or advise from the ladies who have gone through it will be great .

Love to everyone Babs x x

Hi Babs,

You have probably read all the advice given on other peoples blogs.... but it is easier than what you think...after the op though do not lift or stretch ( like putting washing on the line) you think it is ok but it isn't...I thought I was ok and now I have an incisional hernia..so take it easy no carrying a pile of plates etc...I took a beach bag in the hospital with me (a mesh lightweight one) to put my towel, toilet bag, clean clothes etc in,so I could go to the bathroom without fear of dragging everything in the floor..love and best wishes x G x :-)

You will feel so much better when you get near to The Day, Babs. I just wanted to get on with it. It is so much not as bad as I feared, I was in a bit of a state about what it was going to be like....I had never had an op apart from tonsils when I was 5. They Re so good at making you feel confident. I just felt as info was own a conveyor belt to getting better. I took arnica homeopathic pills for a day or two before my op. it's supposed to minimise bruising and promote healing. I also tried some visualisation, look up visualisation CDs online. It really won't be as bad as you are imagining. Make sure you eat well before and after. The main problem I had was constipation. There are a lot of back-threads on here if you use the search box, but pears, figs and prunes seem to be coming out well, if you'll forgive the pun;-)

There Reca lot of conversations about preparing for an op, so you may pick up some useful hints if you type operation into the search box. Good luck.

Try to get some good sleep before, ask for a sedative the night before if you feel it will help. I did! And most of all........try not to worry. You are on a road that has turned the first corner already. You are the road to getting better. I have the highest regard for the medical teams. Most women find that.

Good luck!

Let us know how things are going :-)

Love and hugs

Babs- you are going to be fine: you won't lift things because you really will not want to! My hospital gave me a list of when I could do things i.e.week by week but mysteriously hoovering did not reappear until at least week 20( or that is what I told my husband!).

Joking apart, the very best of luck: I know exactly how you feel.

Love and prayers

Hi Babs,

I have my pre-op assessment tomorrow and all going well I will have my hysterecyomy on Friday the 5th october so I will be keeping an eye on all the advice you get. To be honest it cant come quick enough for me, I look 7 months pregnant at the moment and the discomfort is terrible. It may be a long road to recovery but we will get there just like all the other lovely ladies on here. I hope everything goes well for you.

Lots of love, Caroline xxx

Hi Kitty, I remember the "7 month's pregnancy" look and the discomfort. My partner and I got married just before I started treatment and although I'd just had a drainage, I had to buy a dress that was three sizes bigger than normal. I now really appreciate being able to fit into my own clothes again. Will be thinking of you on 5th October.

Hi Caroline! I will be thinking of you on Oct 5th too. It will be the start of everything getting back to normal. Mind you, I lost so much weight after my op that I panicked and ate for England.........I never lost the stone I gained during my recuperation :-(

Oooops!

Good luck with everything. Let us know how things are when you are back home again.

Hi there Babs ...

Those weeks have flown by and now its nearly here ... and will soon be all over and done with .

Wendy is right its not as bad as you think it might be , when you are up and mobile it will certainly help with the wind ... and so will mint tea or peppermint water .... Drink lots of water to get your bladder and bowels going again and lots of fruit too ...

Above all else rest and lots of TLC and a gentle walk , slow but sure each day ..at first at home and then just a little out doors .You will be able to do a bit more each day ...

Take very good care now xxxx

Hi Babs, I had the same op plus removal of spleen last November. Although I'd been anxious, on the morning itself I felt calm and relaxed and loooked on it as me going to sleep for a few hours whilst the surgeons went to work. I was also given a list of what activities would be appropriate as each week passed. Definitely do not lift anything remotely heavy, including a kettle and don't stretch. Constipation was a bit of a problem for me but it righted itself in time. As the other ladies have said, plenty of fluids and fruit but do tell the doctors if it persists.

I hope you will be treated like royalty from the moment you enter the hospital and throughout your period of recovery.

Much love xxxxx

Hello

Take a small portable radio and earphones with you as it helps shut out the background noise.

As I was wheeled into the anaesthetic room 'Angels' was being played. 'I lie awake does an angel contemplate my fate' amused me, but perhaps not everyone would be amused!

Eat lots of roughage and get those bowels going. I got the impression I wouldn't be able to escape unless I came up with the goods.

Good luck! It's amazing how quickly you get going and feel alright after a major operation. But don't lift anything for 6 weeks,no matter how well you feel. After all, you wouldn't walk on a broken ankle, and your innards need time to recover.

Hi Christine,

The comment about the broken ankle has really put things into prospective for me. Im such an energetic person and I want to get back to work as quick as possible but you are right in what you say about resting and not lifting. I intend taking 2 months off work and if I dont feel right I will take 3 months off. Thanks so much for the advice, Lots of love Babs x x

Thank you ladies for the advise and reassurance, I know everything will be fine Its just that. I was so fit and healthy prior to getting Cancer I still am finding it hard to relax when I'm off work. I know I need the operation and I just keep thinking next year will be better than this year. I have taken on board all the tips you have given me. Love and Hugs to everyone Babs x x x

Hi Babs,

Thank you for asking the question, as you know I'm having the same as you two weeks later, I feel just like you, and can't wait to get the other side of this. Ladies thank you for sharing, it means so much. Sue xx

Dear Babs

It is 3 weeks since I had my surgery & am able to potter around the house, climb the stairs & do a few simple things in the kitchen. I am not in a lot of pain & feel well within myself.

I was very nervous about the op too however after I came home from the hospital I have been feeling better & stronger each day.

Try to keep calm & think positively before the op & you will be fine.

Lots of love & have a lovely weekend, Samixa X :-) :-)
