How to get on a trial

I have read of ladies being accepted for a trial, can I ask how you go about it my onc isn't very helpful and I don't like to ask him . I did ask about avastin but was given a negative response. Do I go to my GPmany thanks in advance this site is the best xx

Hi Nikki,

I am afraid it is time to be masterful with your oncologist. If you have a trial in mind, print it out (e.g. from the cancer research site) and tell your oncologist you would like him to look into whether you could be enrolled. You could try your GP, but in my experience they prefer not to get too involved in the oncology nitty gritty.

As Lizzie has said the best and probably only way to get on a trial is via your oncologist. If they aren't very helpful consider getting a second opinion

I was referred because the standard chemo didnt work to shrink anything (taxol carbo) so she referred me to the Marsden (Im going tomorrow). I didnt have to ask to be referred. Id get a 2nd opinion I think

I have had a meeting about a trial today i was offered it as after all my chemo over 5 years there is not many treatments left for me i would like lizzie says be forcefull i did a lot of research on avastin, other chemo, and went in armed with thousands of questions and thats what they suggested

Go on the Ovacome website, click on About Ovarian Cancer on left hand menus, then on clinical trials, it will give you info about what's going on

I didn't have to ask! My onc asked me! I was on Icon 6 until the allergy made me ineligible! I suggest you follow others' advice and ask! Your onc is a human being, not God! (I knew a lot of medics as a student so I am not in awe of them, they are just as fallible as the rest of us) going armed with printouts etc is useful! My new GP seems to be quite interested in my progress but even he won't interfere with the specialists. As my last treatment was surgical I am under review by the gynae who thinks monthly review is overkill! I am on 3 monthly for now!

I too hope to have access to any trials going when the OC returns!

I asked my oncology nurse specialist for a referral to a different hospital (the Royal Marsden) for a second opinion on my treatment and to ask about parp inhibitor trials. She faxed all my information to them and I rang them to arrange an appointment, I think you have to be quite proactive. I am now on a parp inhibitor trial,
