Hi everyone hope all is well. I have been clear of oc for nearly 13 years. Just recently i have been having bouts of cystitis, been to doctors this morning and i have blood in my urine.Hhe has gave me 7 days antibiotics, and told me if i get another bout of this he would refer me to an uroligist. as you know any little thing gets you thinking, and i have been really worried.just wondering if anyone has had this problem. hoping for some advice. thanks xxx nana flo

Hi,

I used to get this all the time- had the urology referral and kidney scan and multiple lots antibiotics in the three years since my oc. Best advice came from my practice nurse who advised Replens as menopause contributes to vaginal dryness and tears- I use every day and take just one antibiotic after sex and have drastically reduced my infection rate. I also avoid baths as they can make me more prone to infection. hope this helps.

I had exactly the same and got sent for a cystoscopy, ultrasound scan, and CAT scan. They found nothing, I feel fine, I think my urine is still the same. I then went to the menopause specialist at the hospital and it was vaginal dryness making iot feel like cystitis. She prescribed low-dose oestrogen pessaries, but that would depend on whether your ovca was oestrogen-linked. Mine wasn't. Maybe this line of enquiry is worth looking at?

Good Luck

Love, Wendy xx

It's worth getting a referral to your hospital, nana flo! Maybe a word with the specialist gynae cancer nurse at the hospital would allay your fears. There are quite a few non-oestrogen dryness treatments out there too, so it's worth looking into. If only for your feeling of being comfortable.

All the best

Hi,

The natural approach to cystitis is the best - antibiotics cause rebound infection by stripping your good bacteria as well as the bad. So - when you are sure that it is cystitis- start a regime of diet and management that helps your body to prevent it coming back again and again:

so reduce your sugar intake, and drink unsweetened cranberry juice – or if you cannot handle cranberry juice bilberry or blueberry juice has similar benefits or you can get cranberry tablets – when buying juice make sure it's 100% juice not 'drink' as this often has added sugar.

Drink apple juice, again unsweetened, with a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda to make your urine more alkaline.

Herbal teas -don't use any sugar (agave nectar or zylitol if you must) Raspberry leaf, Echinacea, Chamomile, Rosemary, Thyme, Lemon balm – all have various properties that can ease your symptoms.

Wash after urinating.

Don’t use bubble bath or any other bath products as the chemicals will further irritate the infection and are not the best thing for vaginal.

Live plain pro-biotic yogurt both eaten and used as treatment directly on your vagina if you have itching and irritation.

Eat a lot more fruit and vegetable, basically foods rich in alkaline will do the job, things such as bananas, apples, and pineapples, foods rich in vitamin A will also help such as broccoli and leafy green vegetables.

Hope this is helpful and you get well very soon.

Isadora.
