Dealing with erm, unwanted smells in bathroom!

So I'm on chemo yet again, and a more slightly light hearted post I guess, but when my hubby uses the bathroom for erm number 2's the smell just makes me wretch! 🤢 Even when I go number 2 myself actually makes me heave! I've tried various air freshners, but the smell of them combined with au' d'poo just makes it worse! 🤣 But seriously it's no fun when I have to hold a bowl in my lap in case the smell makes me actually chunder! Altho opening the window is an option in the summer, it's too cold at the minute, so have any of u lovely ladies had the same issue and found any cure for this at all please? x

I’ve not had that problem myself and I must admit it did make me chuckle 🤭 but I would suggest maybe placing some tissue carefully up your nostrils before entering the loo to preempt the inevitable. Xx Jen

This had me giggling because I’m sure I am the one stinking up the loo and having to endure light hearted jokes about it. I have begun doing what I call ‘courtesy flushes’. If I feel I’m going to be hogging the bathroom for an indeterminate amount of time because of stubborn poo, I find this helps the expectant fragrance to be diminished. Also, there is a fan in the ceiling I could use, but it’s very loud and I can’t concentrate. 😁

I have never tried it but I've seen 'poo pourri' advertised on the internet - bathroom sprays that are allegedly supposed to eliminate the smells completely but I suppose that doesn't help you if you are stuck on the loo whilst erm...'performing'! But I guess your interim flush helps with that. Good luck x

I'd recommend a large box of matches - strike one as soon as any smell is detected, and strike another if you're in there for a while, as many as you need really. I find it 'removes' the smell, although it doesn't really apparently, just means you can't detect it for a little while. Lot more effective than any air freshener, plus like you, I can't stand air fresheners nor scented sprays any more, and they don't do much anyway in terms of covering smells. Plus to be honest, if you're suffering that much from the smell, I'd definitely open the window, regardless of temperature - my bathroom faces north and its freezing in winter, but that window is open in situations like this, although not when I'm showering... Ths is not a problem I have any more, I lost my sense of smell and taste in April 2023 and now I'm on chemo again, its all completely gone, nothing, can't smell a thing... which is kind of worse, because I have no idea if my bathroom reeks or not...

Hope it helps

Why/how did you lost your sense of smell?

No idea really - I just keep getting told I probably had Covid, and although I did end up in hospital in January 2023 with a COPD exacerbation and chest infection -at that time, my sense of smell was deranged rather than completely absent. They did tests while I was in hospital, but no sign of Covid nor flu, so I don't actually know why - certainly having more chemo now has meant not smelling or tasting a single thing, not even salt, which I was vaguely able to detect prior to chemo in October. I've at least become accustomed to not smelling the milk to see if its off before use, because I know I wouldn't have a clue if it was totally toxic...

Second the suggestion for lighting a match - maybe use it to light a scented candle, too? I find them more effective than air fresheners.

May seem a little extreme, but quick smear of Vic (other decongestants are available) under your nose 👍

I'm in the states but the I've heard tell that when a professional has to enter a dwelling of a deceased person, they put Vicks Mentholatum in each nostril to avoid smelling it.

Poopourri you spray it in the bowl, it magically traps the odors. No smells. I’ve been there. Good luck! 💩🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹

Might be worth investing in an effective extractor fan if you can't open the window?

Funnily enough that is something we've been thinking about lately too

Have you tried odour neutralising sprays rather than trying to add another scent these are odourless

I've managed to get some Neutradol which is supposed to be fragrance free, although I can still smell it, its not overpowering so we'll see how it goes 😊

Poor you! I had Poo Pourri but the scent was vile I thought. Nasty chemical lemon . I now have this (Repair The Air) and it's very gentle and natural and you can get it on Amazon I think. Super effective x
