Waiting a diagnosis 😞

Good afternoon all

Basically, I went for a transvaginal ultrasound on Monday which came back with a 41mm “cyst” (the dr hopes) although they cannot be certain because of the thickening on one side.

So, I have been referred under the 2 week pathway. I have my first gynae app tomorrow, and I am just wondering what sort of things should I expect? What usually happens at this stage? I am a total nervous wreck 😰

Dr went through everything on Monday and said that they’d want to rule out ovarian cancer - so that’s the only thing I really know.

I am 40 years old and suffered minor symptoms- it was the mish mash periods that triggered the US

thanks so much for taking time to read, you are all very brave and inspiring ladies

thanks again xx

Hello, sorry to hear you are in this position.

Glad that you are on the 2 week pathway but you may find that it takes several visits and a few tests to come up with an answer.

You will probably have a CT scan and blood tests. Once they have a few results they will probably be sent to MDT (multi disciplinary team) for an opinion about what this is and a plan going forward.

You might get an ultrasound guided biopsy ( which doesn’t take long and usually done with local anaesthetic).

So it’s a process rather than a one off appointment where you get the result.

Take something to write on and if you can take someone else along.

It can be difficult to remember all the information you are told at each appointment.

You are right in thinking that they are trying to rule out cancer and I sincerely hope that is exactly what happens! xx

Thank you so much for your reply,

I really do hope and pray it’s not as I have so much going on right now (lost dad just before Xmas - he was only 60 yo😢 and although he died in hospital it was “unexpected” so postmortem was carried out - this came back inconclusive and still waiting on a cause of his passing😞 plus coroners court next month) I really don’t feel I can take much more😥x

I am clinging on to every little bit of hope that there is that this is something else and is easily manageable - any stories of this would be appreciated and encouraging.

Thanks all x

Love and hugs to you. I pray it's not OC but if it is they will jump on it and treat you right away

Hi Sparkleshimmer, Lyndy2 covered the process they will follow very well, wishing you a simple cyst but if it is Ovarian cancer it is a very common cancer and the path the doctors would follow is well trodden. The blood test they look at for OC is the ca125 one though it can be higher for other than OC. The CT scan with biopsy is the best test. There had been steps forward in research with new drugs in the last few years with OC so looking at figures for OC on Dr Google can be very outdated .

Wishing you well, we are all here to help you if needed X

Dear Sparkleshimmer

Thank you for your post. I’m really sorry to hear that you’re feeling so nervous after recent ultrasound results. I can see you’ve had several replies from the forum community which I hope you have found helpful.

I just wanted to share an Ovacome information booklet titled ‘What happens if you are diagnosed with ovarian cancer’ which I hope may help to answer some of your questions, and can be found here on our website: ovacome.org.uk/what-happens... . We can also send this to you in the post, free of charge, if you prefer?

I also wanted to let you know that we are here for you, so please don't hesitate to get in touch if there's anything we may be able to support you with. You can send us a message here on the forum, call us on 0800 008 7054 or email us via support@ovacome.org.uk. We’re here Monday – Friday, 10am – 5pm, to help with queries, provide information or to talk through anything that may be on your mind. We can also help plan or prepare for future appointments if you think that may be useful.

I hope the initial gynaecology appointment went as smoothly as possible and was able to provide some clarity and reassurance.

Best wishes
