Gum and dental trouble anyone?

I've just finished 6 treatments of carbo-caelyx. I am suffering from ulcers that never seem to heal and inflamed gums. I keep thinking I have an abcess! I've booked a dental appointment. Has anyone else had this?

Really sorry to hear this.

Before every chemo session your nurse should ask you of any side effects that you might be suffering from and the mouth ulcers are a very common problem and I'm disappointed to read they have not asked you that question already but I suppose all hospitals are different. I would raise it with your cancer hospital.

Before I have my chemo I am asked every time if I am suffering from mouth ulcers. Fortunately I'm not but your hospital would be better placed to advise you rather than your dentist.

Hope they go soon.

I had the same problem, and found Corsodyl mouth wash helpful. I found this slightly more effective than Difflan which the hospital advised.

Hi my nurse recommended Difflam which numbed my ulcers but didn't seem to heal them. A pharmacist suggested Alocair which seemed to work far better. And finally my dentist said my use of Corsodyl Daily could have caused them coz it's not for daily use??? because it bumps off the good bacteria as well as the bad!

This is a very common side effect of Caelyx so either call your emergency number or speak to your team, they should be able to help. All the best Sue xx

I've had the same problem for cycles four and five , Difflam didn't help at all , Corsodyl helped more , I found the pain was eased by Iglu ,a paste you smear on the ulcers bit yukky but helped heal and protect ,one big ulcer I couldn't get to right at the side of my tongue but at the back clung on ,chemo nurse posted me some gelclair , it arrived through my letter box minutes ago ,I'm just about to try it . I put up a post last week about ulcers and had lots of helpful replies , I hope you find some relief ,it really got me down .Cheryl xx

Hi ritabonI have a similar issue, and I just lost a tooth. Argh! Went to the dentist yesterday. She will take care of the tooth, and also gave me a mouth rinse that she recommends for chemo patients and is available on Amazon: STELLALIFE Intelligent Healing Vega Oral Care Peppermint. I had a sore from where the tooth rubbed against my gum and now the sore is gone!
