Sudden onset ascities?

I have stage 4 high grade inoperable OV cancer. Responded well to first line chemo and now on naraparib parp inhibitor. Have been feeling really well. However, since Wednesday evening I have been in a lot of pain in my stomach, back and at my waist. Could this be ascities? Can it come on so suddenly? Only spoke to my oncologist on Wednesday morning and not due another phone call from him for 2 months. I have only ever had a mobile number for my cancer nurse and now that says "calls to this number are not being connected". Tomorrow (Monday) should I phone my GP or try to contact the oncologist's secretary? And have any of you lovely ladies any suggestions to ease the pain? (It really is awful). Thanks x

I am sorry to hear that you are feeling unwell. My advice, having ignored symptoms I really should have got checked out, is not to delay. Ask the oncologist secretary for an urgent review or if necessary call 111. Parp inhibitors can cause bad side effects, it may not be the cancer but it’s best to take action! Best of luck xx

Thank you for replying. Have done 111 and waited 20 minutes to get through then spent ages answering questions but they got a nurse to ring me and she was very helpful. She is getting my GP to call me this morning x

Hi.. I would be persistent, its not right that if the nurse has changed her number not to let you know. Who cares if you only had call with your oncologist on Wednesday, they need to be available if these things happen and not ave to wait for another two months before speaking to them. They get paid a lot of money to look after people and when you need them they really need to support you regardless of just having spoken to you. Call anyone and anybody including your GP as you need to get to the bottom of your current discomfort. 🥰

Totally agree with your comments its been a horrible 18 months for some of us. Hopefully things are slightly getting back too normal not sure if lm kidding myself really lve just got my 6 months checkup appointment in Feb22 blood tests one day next day telephone call which l think is a total waste of time. Xx

Nothing seems to be getting back to normal here. Have never met my oncologist in person yet. Emergency line just seems to deal with you if your symptoms are for sepsis and chemo unit only available week days x

Yes indeed. In Cumbria cancer services are far from good. Onc's secretary says he is not available today but will ring me tomorrow. Cancer nurse's number now says she is unavailable until 27th (which is today!) and to ring a switchboard number. Switchboard gave me another number which gives 3 engaged rings and then cuts me off. Thanks goodness my GP said somebody would see me at lunchtime x

GP saw me. Very reassuring. Full examination and went in detail through this month's scan. Said my bowels had become backed up and told me what medications to buy. Just as well as left message asking for cancer nurse to call me but she hasn't (again). Supposed to hear from oncologist tomorrow. Will wait and see but much more comfortable now that laxatives working (possibly too well but can cope with that). Thanks you so much for replying. Best wishes x

Hi I’m sorry your going through such pain, I would contact consultant’s secretary and explain you couldn’t get through to specialist nurse ask her if numbers have changed and has she new contact details. Also tell her how much pain your in and when it started and ask for emergency review and chat with oncologist. You could always take yourself to a and e sometimes gp can do urgent referrals for ct scan. Always tell any drs you talk to drugs your on. Good luck let us know how you get on,Mish x

If you can't be connected to your nurse by her mobile number, if you need help again, would the hospital switchboard put you through or give you an updated number? in the meantime, I hope you quickly get sorted now

Switchboard put me on to a number which said I had to phone another number. It was engaged all morning. Eventually left message in her department and they promised she would ring. Heard nothing yet (6-30pm) !! Thanks for replying x

Cumbrianlass5 profile image
Cumbrianlass5 in reply topolo2014

I have a card with a number to ring if I get any of the signs of sepsis. Otherwise there is just a mobile number for my cancer nurse who does not work weekends and on week days is often working in gynae clinic and unavailable. However, she did ring me back late last night. (I had left a message that morning). Spoke to my oncologist's secretary yesterday morning too but he was not available and is supposed to be ringing me today. Thank goodness my GP saw me and said it was not the cancer causing the pain but that my bowel was backed up. He told me what laxatives to buy and they have eased things a bit. Thank you for replying. Best wishes to you x
