Successful surgery after being told not suitable?

Hello,

I’m looking to see if anyone has had successful debunking surgery after being initially told they aren’t suitable?

We have just had a second opinion for my mum, from a surgeon who will operate, but slightly hesitant.

Many thanks x

Having debulking surgery is beneficial to a good outcome from first line treatment...so I think you are going along the right lines. I was probably inoperable when first diagnosed (they just didn’t tell me) but after 4 chemo I got my op and an optimal result. My oncologist explained that it would make my final 2 chemos more effective. It’s always good to get a second opinion...particularly when you come to a brick wall. Very best of luck to you and your Mum xx

An operation should certainly give a better outcome long term. Just be sure you trust your new surgeon and that he or she has had successful outcomes in the past. All very best wishes x

Thank you. Surgeon is professor Christina who I came across on this forum who seems to be very well regarded 🙏🏻🙏🏻 I am just unsure why she is happy to do the surgery yet the Christie aren’t.. x

Prof Christina is incredible. I was fortunate to have her for my 2nd debulking Jan 2020. The anaesthetist told me she’s the best surgeon he’s ever worked with.

Really hope it all works out 🤞🏼xxx

I was considered inoperable and have had 12 cycles of chemo, then was referred to surgeon for another opinion, and had the op 8 weeks ago. Seems to have been successful, but of course with this disease there is no guarantee.

That’s interesting thank you - Im glad you managed to get the surgery eventually. I presume the chemo helped to shrink the cancer to a point where you were operable? My mums cancer is coating her bowel so she was told she wasn’t suitable after 3 chemo, but after getting a second opinion with another surgeon, she has said she will do it now... just wondering whether it’s best to take up the offer of surgery now or continue with chemo for the time being.

Really hope it was a success for you!

If Prof Christina has offered to operate I’d grab that! She wouldn’t offer the op if she thought she couldn’t give her a good chance & she is v well known in her field as one of the best esp in difficult cases. Maybe more chemo might be an option for your mum after op as mop up. She debulked my mum 5 years ago (stage 4) & we will be forever grateful. Good luck.

My mum’s consultant has now said he won’t refer her to Christina as he doesn’t think it’s a good idea. Feeling very disheartened!

Ask your GP to refer you. I was referred to another oncologist at another hospital by my GP and to yet another oncologist at yet another hospital by my cancer nurse. It is your right under the NHS x

Debulking surgery if she can have it will make a big difference to her outcome. Take it if it’s offered. X
