Mucinous ovarian cyst

Hello

Once an ovarian cyst is removed and it’s showing to have mucinous cancer cells, why do I need to have a rectal camera procedure and one down my throat? Also, before the operation, an MRI was completed. Would this be reassuring that nothing was found then? What’s next, is treatment needed?

Thank you x

Hi MizzaI am sorry to hear that you have a diagnosis. Sorry but I don’t know about the investigations for mucinous OC ... but your oncologist should answer these questions and you have every right to ask. If you have a CNS then you can ask them or if not then try ringing your oncologists secretary and explain what you want. The Dr should ring you back xx

Hi Mizza

I had mucinous oc.

Mucinous oc is different to all other types in that it is similar to bowel cancer. They like to check that it is primary in the ovary as it can be a secondary from the bowel hence the rectal check.

Some scans are very difficult to interpret. Often a tumour has to be at least 2mm before it can be detected on a scan. For mucinous PET scans are not often used as they tend to indicate active cell division which does not always happens in slow growing tumours.

Have you had a copy of your histology report? If not I suggest you obtain one. You really need to know the stage and grade of the cancer which determines the next treatment.

Nice guidelines suggest from stage 1 C and above that the usual regime is followed. However, some now follow a watch and wait regime if no cells are found in the wash after the operation. Depends on the stage and grade as I have said before.

Sometimes it can be mixed mucinous and other type but you need to know.

Please put mucinous in the search box to find my previous posts on mucinous and other mucinous threads. Although things are changing all the time most of them are still relevant.

Please feel free to come back to me with any questions. I only look at the forum occasionally now so am a little slow in replying sometimes.

Best wishes

Fay
