Hello my oncologist is happy to use carboplatin for me although my first recurrence was within 6 months. She says that it is an old view and carbo sensitive/resistant status is just terminology in her opinion and it will gradually be phased out with regard to diagnosis, but of course this will take time. I am on my 3rd course of carbo, within two years and so far so good. Good luck, don't be afraid to get a 2nd opinion if you feel uneasy about your treatment plan.

Thank you Lyn that is encouraging, I had Carbo & Taxel, then Gem & Cissplatin and now starting Ciss and Caelyx.

Hello I’m considered carbo insensitive which does limit treatment options. I’m back on Pacitaxol to see if that will keep my reoccurrence at bay. Jane

I am platinum resistant and recurred during frontline treatment. I am on a clinical trial. I believe the drug I’m on may sensitise people to platinum - I think there may be several new targeted therapies in trials so definitely worth asking about this,

Unlikely anything can be done to change platinum resistance - 'platinum resistant' means the cancer cells are unaffected by platinum (whether it was very effective in the first place or not) and so it will no longer be an effective treatment because the cancer cells are now 'immune' or partially 'immune' to damage by platinum. It's no different than an infection such as MRSA mutating slightly so that it is now no longer killed off by previously used antibiotics.

In reality though, cisplatin itself also contains platinum as part of its formulation, and seems often to be used in combination with other, non platinum based drugs when carboplatin is no longer effective.

After carbo/taxol , carbo/gem and carbo/caelyx in less than 3 years. l am now classed as carbo resistant. Especially as my cancer progressed during the last treatment. This proves carbo no longer effective. Now l am being offered plaxitaxol alone.

I am brca negative. Apparently if this does not halt progression there are still a few of the older chemo drugs that can be used. My particular cancer has started to behave in an aggressive way, looking at the latest ct scan. Wishing you well in your search for an answer.
