Morning all, due to have a permanent drain done next week to control my ascites. Anyone else had this and are there any side effects?

Hello New. All the best with your drain. I had ascites twice and felt overwhelming relief instantly with each drain.

The only side effect I suffered was with the first drain. The fluid drained so quickly that I lost too much protein (albumin) so the drain had to be removed. It was a nuisance having to keep having the bag emptied but the relief in my peritoneal cavity was incredible.

I still can't get over how ill I felt with ascites second to ovarian cancer.

Sending you a heartfelt hug and best wishes x

Thank you Tudor, I seem to fill up so quickly and have trouble breathing, let alone walking any distance. Hopefully a permanent drain will mean it an be emptied more often rather than waiting until I am completely bloated. Thanks for the hug, needed that x

Yes, Newfoundland I had one put in, and still have it in - hoping to have it removed soon. I was like you couldn't breath and walking upstairs was so difficult and walking in general. However it was better having a permanent one so I could ask the district nurse to come and do a drainage when necessary, rather than ending up in hospital and having to go through the unpleasant procedure of putting in a drain every time. No side effects whatsoever. I feel sorry for you - not a nice place to be - struggling for air, quite frightening. All the best my dear, it does pass. Anne xxx

I am getting the drain placed on Wednesday. I was wondering how your procedure went. I have malignant ascetis secondary to Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. Hope you're doing well.

I had the drain placed yesterday. I was awake for the whole procedure and am experiencing some soreness at the site. They took out 5 liters during the procedure. The doctor recommended I drain one liter every day. Did my first drain tonight at home. It was very easy and very quick. It will be so nice to not fill up every 10 days or so. So far this looks like a great solution. Good luck to you.
