Trying to plan

Dr wants me to start Carboplatin. Do I just stay home until I know the side effects? Hoping people can give me a clue as to how soon after the infusion I might feel crummy.

Hi!

I didn't feel particularly crummy on carboplatin. I didn't do the antisickness pills as soon as I realised there wasn't going to be a problem. I felt a bit tired and occasionally a little sick on days 3-5 (i'd take either an antisick pill or some ginger tea). That was it really. A few minor things on and off - I think those early days round 3-5 are the worst and even then it was only slightly crappy. I sometimes work till midnight and found that was a bit much on those days so I changed it eventually. Oh I felt a bit 'agitated' - again around day 3 - it's the steroids. They can make you awake at night too which is a bit irritating.

Drink plenty and keep a weather eye out for constipation, again in the first week. The carbo alone is very do-able...most of the side effects seem to be when they start combining it with other stuff.

My experience was pretty similar to Lynnes description...it is cumulative... so by cycle 6 you will certainly be tired and possibly with some neuropathy but once you stop hey presto! Your body starts to recover and repair. Just remember to do what you are told..particularly if your temp goes up xx

Similar to Lynn. My first round of chemo was carboplatin plus paxitaxel. I felt tired on days 4-5, then slowly back to normal on days 6-7. Did not suffer much from nausea (with the recommended pills). Slept poorly on the 'good' days. Had that awful metallic taste in my mouth and generally lost taste.

Thanks they have talked about doing 2 drugs. I am not certain what the other one is called. I expressed a preference for just one

I found carboplatin tolerable (twice--once for recurrence) with second agent, so not sure which agent caused some (mild) side effects but mostly I felt fine. In Frontline--when I had Carbo/Taxol. only the week with Carbo added (so every third week) I got paranoid for a couple of days--so a mental feeling, not physical. That slowly went away but since I always knew it was coming, I worked my life around it (mostly stayed in or did exercise when I knew others I socialize with would not be there). It was so strange to get this but I did. Physically I found it quite tolerable (and as other say "with meds" to help it was tolerable).

I had carboplatin with taxol- days one and two I was fine then three through five, extremely tired, taste changes, constipation, neuropathy, hair loss, and low magnesium levels but that being said - all doable.
