Have you had to reapply?

No. This is one Macmillan nurse applied for when diagnosed

I am confused if you are not reapplying for PIP why are you being asked to attend an interview now? How long have you been claiming PIP as they normally award if for 3 yrs. I would get advice from a MacMillan or Maggie’s benefit advisor. Have you applied for ESA?

Hi Zena. From experience, You will be asked various questions, what mediation you take. How you manage day to day etc, how far you can walk without pain, what help you need in the house. My biggest issue is the dizziness caused by the medication. This could be limiting say being over to take something from the oven. I'd read horror stories but it was fairly straight forward tbh. I just told it like it is. Obv I am not bad as I work full time but I couldn't run a marathon and I have to be careful when cooking or coming down stairs etc. Good Luck xx Kathy

PIP isn’t a working benefit so you can claim it even if you work. It is to cover the cost of your ‘disability’ so they will focus on moving round not just pain anything that restricts your mobility eg anxiety, pain, breathlessness, bowels.

They will also want to know how you cope preparing and eating meals and also washing, bathing etc as this is what the care component is for.

I found this to help you

However I really do not understand why they are only sending for you now. It is usually before they process your claim

Hi Zena.

Obviously everything has changed over the years and I had to look up what PIP was and it has replaced Disability Living Allowance. I received this whilst living in UK and had my assessment many years ago for MS. My GP had to fill in a form first and then I had to go to see an independent doctor. That doctor had to confirm that I was 80% or more disabled before the allowance was approved. I had a thorough medical together with a whole list of questions. I was in the middle of an attack at the time so hobbled in with a walking stick. Any other time I would have been able bodied. However, I made light of the situation and didn't try to be more disabled than I was and ended up having a joke about my clumsiness and unable to get dressed myself sometimes. The doctor decided that I was more than 80% disabled (which shocked me) and I was awarded the allowance for life - but it stopped when I moved abroad - but I only wanted the mobility component as I thought that I didn't need the care component as I wasn't that disabled and with MS there were times I was bed/wheelchair bound and needed help with dressing etc but the rest of the time I was OK.

I hope this helps you sweetie.

I am also surprised they have called you in. I would suggest that you query this and explain how difficult and demanding it will be for you to attend.

It is useful to be aware that your assessment starts before you even enter the building. If you have got their under your own steam or unaccompanied that will be duly noted.

If you have not already see if you can get a copy of your original application form. This forms the basis of the assessment so it is useful to know what was said. Hopefully your Macmillan nurse will have taken a copy.

Good luck and remember not to be over positive about how independent you are. We all I think tend to under play how difficult things can be but now is not the time to do that!

No I was not called for an interview- my CNS had endorsed my application so I expect that helped. I was given PIP for 2 years

I was given PIP for 3 years. I had a nurse call me and went through what had happened. She submitted a report from our phone conversation.

I lost mine at this meeting, I was too positive. I was was in recurrence by the following week, tried to inform them before the letter came through but was not able to. I was on it for 18 months.

Cancer connections have taken it up for me. It made a big difference to my independence.

I thought at the meeting I may get the reduced rate as did feel better after further surgery for a bowel obstruction last year but not lose everything.

The ups and downs of this disease are so unpredictable, they just didn’t care.

Take the meeting very seriously and visit maggies or Macmillan before you go. Better still see if one of them will go with you.

Hi Zena,

I'm not sure at what stage you are at with your PIP application! I helped my brother complete his lengthy application form for PIP which was then sent in. He was then given a date/time for a personal interview with a trained person which took about 45/60 mins. He was then informed shortly thereafter that he'd qualified for full mobility and social care. Mybrother was previously on Disability Living Allowance but had to switch over when PIP came into being and go through the whole application process again. I believe everybody has to go through this process when applying for PIP.

Good luck with the bowels Zena. We are off onholiday tomorrow, to Israel for a guided tour and beach holiday. 12 days. Can't wait. Going to forget all about my health issues.

Best wishes and hope to speak when I get back.

Hi again Zena,

I agree with what Julia said; don't be over-positive or underplay things - everyday is a bad day and that is the norm!

I was first awarded PIP 4 years ago, & have so far not been asked to have an interview. I was initially visited by a Macmillan nurse attached to our local hospice who told me I was entitled to it, & she arranged it for me. I then had a letter saying I had been awarded it for 3 years. When the time had nearly run out last year, someone from Macmillan arranged it after getting a form from my GP. If you have already been awarded it, I don't understand why you need an interview. Di
