I've signed, although I have some reservations about relying on BRACA - I have a different mutation (BRIP1) so a BRACA test would have been false security.

I’ve not heard of this Rachael xx

According to my report from the Genetic Service 'The BRIP1 gene has only relatively recently been identified and alterations in it are thought to be associated with 5-10% lifetime risk of ovarian cancer - this gene alteration is inherited in a dominant pattern which means there is a 50% risk that your son or daughter could have the same gene alteration'. My daughter is getting tested for BRIP1. My mother died of OC in 1980.

I had heard that the mutations they are looking for in testing is picking up more than BRCA.

Was this found through your blood or tumour Rachael.

Do you mind me asking where abouts you are and if you know the name of the test. I’m assuming it’s a mutation that’s part of screening for something else? Xx

I'm in Surrey, the test was done by South West Thames Genetic Service. I thought they were doing BRACA, and they were, but they came up with this extra mutation as part of that. Just a blood test.

Thank you. I’m glad you’ve found this out, everything crossed for your daughters results to be negative xx

How did you get tested for this gene? I’ve just read it can’t be tested??? Xxx

Just for reference I found the same. But it looks like this mutation was highlighted as an important factor in 2016.

Seems to be a lot that could be done, that actually doesn’t get done.

Thank you Racheal for bringing it to our attention x

Done! I found out last March that I have the faulty BRCA1 gene after 2 separate breast cancers under the age of 50, 11 and 12 years ago and OVC 3 years ago. My sister has just tested positive so at least she can now have her ovaries and Fallopian tubes removed by keyhole surgery and her breasts monitored. Much less trauma and a huge saving to the NHS compared to my 9-hour surgery, chemo etc.!
