I’ve signed. I was lucky in that being retired when I was diagnosed, my income was unaffected. I can understand how difficult it must be with reduced income yet increased costs, taxis, extra heating, little luxuries, etc.

Im lucky enough to be unaffected but it must be to some the little luxuries include heating etc. Ppl are having to stay off work, sometime with little or no sick pay and have to go through treatment in the winter so have extra heating bills etc.

Hi there ...

Thanks for the link.

I have to that say the Bank of Scotland, at one time, seconded staff to Macmillan and I know that legal team helped a lot of people suffering from cancer by giving them technical know how. I’m not sure if that particular scheme is still running. It was for cancer patients to get financial advice no matter where they banked. Anyway, since you mentioned it, I’ve done a search which customers of Lloyd’s, a Bank of Scotland and Halifax, (all under the same umbrella) might find useful:

macmillan.org.uk/about-us/w...

There are details on how to get advice with a phone number which is 0808 808 00 00.

I used to work for a bank, one of my many incarnations, before I went into teaching, and it was a cold and heartless place to work. I’m not talking about the staff but the place fostered a money, money ethic which I think was toxic. That was in the 80s and I can’t see their approach to profiteering being any different because selling money for profit is their business and it’s hard for the customer to see the quality of the goods sold as money exchange is mostly invisible. That’s why it’s easy to mis-sell products like PPI. We all know that the financial regulator does sometimes catch up with wrongs done which is why so many people got compensation for their mis-selling of PPI. They don’t get away with everything.

So I think any reaching out by the banks in a formal way is a huge step forward and a very good thing for customers. I suspect ringing the bank after a diagnosis isn’t the first thing on a person’s mind. It’s sometimes hard to even tell a neighbour never mind the anyone else. They might be more inclined though if they realise that they’ll be seen with compassion and given useful help and advice.

Thanks again for this.

Sue xx

I've just added my signature. I took retirement on health grounds but it was an extremely worrying time trying to work out how we would manage financially. Anything that helps can only be a bonus. Xx
