Hi jools, I had no experience of fasting , I needed lots of carbs to 'soak up' the nausea but everybody's different. We need fuel to function and to heal. ❤️Xx Jane

jools, with anti nausea meds, steroids and antihistamines given to me prior to each infusion, I did not experience nausea, itching or allergic reactions to chemo. I could not imagine not eating because I need nutrients to heal. I lived on slices of rotisserie chicken, brown rice and organic greek honey yogurt for five months. I knew that if I didn't eat, I could not recover. So, I'm confused about why anyone would starve themselves when they are fighting to stay alive.

Temporary fasting is meant to be quite powerful for kick-starting the body and it seems that it may help with nausea. I didn't do it the first time around (didn't know about it), but I'd look into it if I end up having a second round of chemo. A couple of ladies on here have done it.

For how long Yosh? And on what days of cycle? Sounds dreadful. I was so hungry on chemo days from the steroids! But interesting.

I did. I fasted prior to chemo and during chemo. I really believed it helped me. I had very little side effects.

Hi

Certainly not love my food ! the body is trying to heal and needs energy . I also had surgery in the middle so needed to keep everything working as constipation can be a big issue plus needed protein to repair . Was lucky as took meds supplied and had no nausea or sickness .

Hope you find a routine that works for you .

Best wishes Kim x

The theory is that when you fast "normal cells" go to sleep but cancer cells cannot. So when you fast prior to chemo your shutting the normal cells. When you start eating normally again these normal cells pop back into action and haven't been harmed by the chemo as much as they would have.

I fasted but is wasn't starvation I ate home made veg soup and drank lots of green teas. I did loose weight but I always regained it prior to the next chemo.

There's a doctor in California just now doing lots of interesting work around this area. Fasting also apparently "reboots" your stem cells apparently helping strengthen your immunity.

I don't know if any of this is true but from my point of view I never had any horrendous side effects and my bloods remained good during treatment.

I would do it again. In fact I keep meaning to implement more fasting into my lifestyle.

Happy to answer any questions you have

Take care x

Hi Julie my chemo used to be on a Thursday so i started on the Monday I would have the home made veg soup or miso soup for lunch and dinner. I would drink lots of water and green tea. If I was struggling usually Wednesday night I would end up eating a carrot or similar. Thursday chemo day soup again and Friday i would have the soup again for lunch then a normal dinner, however it would be a light dinner one not to shock the system. The weekend i started eating normally again. I did loose about half a stone each time but i always regained the weight. If I hadn't I might have reassessed it. The weekend I normally felt a little tired. I said it was like a hangover without the alcohol. At the start I took the anti sickness tablets but i soon realised I didn't need them. By the Monday felt completely normal again. I have school age children and never missed a school run. I do think I was really lucky but I believe the fasting helped.

The doctor in California is developing a meal system, in fact I think he has and it provides the correct levels of fats, carbs etc but that option didn't exist when I was doing it.

I've just been catching up as I haven't been on for a while sorry to read your back on this rollercoaster. Take care x

Hi Jools, my sister did quite a lot of research on this & when we saw my onc they just poo poo the whole thing down. So I have never tried it, wish I had but the onc seem to think fasting puts your bloods dangerously low so chemo cant take place. If that's true I don't want the chances of having chemo put at risk.

If anyone knows different I might give it a go. My sister seems to think fasting could get me in to remission & keep me there. I do know my onc poo poos everything I suggest but does that mean I shouldn't give anything a try.

If you do decide to try it let us know because we are all up for trying new things that might get us in a better place. Take care Cindyxx

If you type in the words Daily Telegraph Fasting into google then a link should come up entitled "Fasting for three days to rejuvenate entire immune system " written on 03/12/2016. Interesting little article if you are interested in having a look. xxx

Yes, i did quite a lot of research into fasting and decided to try it for my first chemo and see how i got on. I was so impressed that i stuck with the regime throughout the six chemo treatments.

For three days before chemo, the day of treatment and one day after, i ate melon for breakfast and lunch and a water based carrot soup for dinner plus lots of water. I did lose weight but had made up the weight by my next chemo. I did not mention this regime to my oncologist team, as i knew what their opinion would be! If i need treatment again, i shall be going back onto this semi fast.

I'm quite in favour of fasting and was going to have a go at it last time around. The thing that stopped me in my tracks was the steroids. I'm very sensitive to them and hate them. And they're supposed to be taken with or after food. This wouldn't rule out fasting at other times, of course.

I'd be interested to hear more about Longo's meal plan stuff.....
