It's all about how they define being terminal. Being incurable means you could go on for years just keeping on top of the disease but to get the full benefits from any pension etc you have to have less than 12 months. Not an easy thing to do I imagine. i hope you get the best outcome you can for your situation. X

A friend of mine had this when he was given a short time to live 9 years ago . He is still very much alive .

personally - no. I even know someone with aggressive, untreatable, inoperable brain cancer, who was taken off all treatment apart from steroids for pain, and even he wasn't given that letter.

I think you must be literally at the end of ALL treatments and NO surgery option to get anything of the sort and even then I'm sure it'll be hard to get.

but I'm curios to see what others say

Has anyone managed to get their pension with this less than 12 months to live clause and then survive more than 12 months ?

Yes I got a small private pension aid out

My doctor asked how old I was and what age I would get the pension not for another ten years

I am advanced stage four

Like he said he is not god he cannot give specific timeline so he signed mine

Hi there. I managed to get my NHS pension on health grounds in December 2015 (with full benefits as if I had paid in till retirement age - I was 54 at the time). My consultant outlined my treatment and gave the worst case scenario as to prognosis - ie less than a year.

I'm still here (and would like to say going strong, but having a few hiccups at the moment). Push for everything you can get. It made hard reading but it was worth it. Good luck. Ali xx

When I applied for mine, aged 54, I had just been diagnosed with a recurrence, 8 months after completing first line chemo. My oncologist sent a report to the Occupational health doctor and he asked !my permission to include CT scan reports. He also supported my application. I had to provide a report too. I don't believe they were asked to say I had less than 12 months to live, I would have recalled that. However my oncologist did quote statistics for my stage and type of OC. Ann x

You may also be entitled to PIP, a non means tested benefit. If they do tell you that you have a short time to live, you should get the full amount, even if you live longer than they say. I got mine through Macmillan 3 years ago. Di
