Always given update: Do oncology appointments... - My Ovacome
Always given update
Hi
When I was having chemo the meetings were normally to update them of how I had been , any side effects etc . Confirm that bloods were OK to go ahead with next chemo and I would ask what CA 125 was. It was normally reading for the cycle before . I know not everyone wants to know their CA125 but mine was a good indicator so was keen for an update .
It is only natural that we try and protect our loved ones , must admit I do try and put a positive spin on info for my mum but If it is worrying you maybe ask about her CA125 to put your mind at rest .

My CA125 are not tested every time. The onc says it is not necessary but I often write it on the blood form myself to request it. I then have to request the results as the nurses don't have access to it on my notes, but go and look on the system to find it for me.

When I had chemo last year I would ask for a printout of my blood results and CA125: this was because it was hit and miss as to whether I'd automatically receive my results- and I wanted to know
This time my CA125 isn't measured weekly but I always ask- sometimes it's as if they are worried with what you'll do with the news!

The hospital tend not to give CA125 levels, unless you ask.
I am not getting a ca125 check at all although I was allowed one when I asked. I was told that it was of no use diagnostically at this time-first line chemo after op.
In my experience, CA125 results take at least 24 hours to come through, so would not be available on the day. If you get them at all, it would be retrospectively at the next appointment. If your daughter doesn't ask, they may not mention it. I have always been obsessive about getting my CA125 levels but not everyone - particularly the doctors - feels that way!
Hi there
They usually only give CA125,results when you ask for them . For some women its a good indicator that chemo is working but for others it's not reliable as it can show a false positive or false negative. This is why many oncologists don't like it as they say it makes women anxious. They prefer to rely on scans . The CA125 result will always be three weeks behind when you are on three weekly cycle of chemo. The best of luck. Take care

I found that I had to ask each time. Continually told it's not important for me to know those numbers and results... they decide what course of action to take. I quickly straightened them out. No one has a greater interest in my results more than me and I insisted on them. Good luck
Thanks for all your helpful comments 😀 I know she didn't want to know and respect her wishes ,it's just me ! She says enough to cope with without worrying about that .Last chemo in morning 👏🏻 little break and holiday and then 5 weeks of radiotherapy 👍🏼😬
Hi Harleeboo. I WANT THAT CA125 ! I've been on this OC treadmill for > 5 years now & so I have a fair idea of how reliable/unreliable my results are. Oncs get v sensitive to the fact that women can get upset or emotional about their CA125, so they often don't like to give it out. I always approach it v carefully & rarely give a comment. Always keep my voice low & steady if I need to ask anything about my CA125. If my onc doesn't offer it during my appt, well I'm about to go for my infusion, the nurses have my file, so I ask them ! My oncs partner (in the same rooms), won't give it out at all to his patients.
I have my bloods taken locally the morning of the day before my apt & the results are with my onc <24 hrs later. But if I have bloods taken at the hospital, it only takes 1-1.5 hrs for the result to be on the system. I don't choose the latter as I'd have to be out of bed too early for my liking!
My best suggestion is to find a way to get what you want. Good luck. Pauline.
Hi Like Pauline I do ask every time but I know the Patton of my 124 now, when I see my oncologist I ask her each time some times I will ask the chemo nurse. but i know it's not important as her team will also keep a eye on it , she can ask if she wishes .Cheers and sending my best wishes,,Lorraine xx
