Hi everyone, my mom has had chemo 4 today and I just called her and she is in terrible pain - where they put the chemo in has gone all black and swollen - she was about to go to A and E. I am petrified - has anyone else had or heard of this?

I have never heard of port going black , I had my port removed last week due to a recurring infection I had it in for over four years but it only got very inflamed, did you take your Mum's temperature, can you ring an Oncology ward if not I would take her to A and E and explain to them she is on chemo and unable to sit in a waiting room due to infection she should be seen to pretty quick. Thanks for your reply Kittie - I am not with her, in a different city but her husband is taking her in right now.

I have had this with a cannula...if the chemo leaks into the flesh rather than going into the vein it should be seen by oncology..or it could just be bruising. Your Mum should have an emergency number for oncology (the one she would use if she had a temperature) use it to get advice rather than sitting in a and e with all the bugs! X

Thanks Lynay. We think now it may be bruising but she needs to get it checked again. She has a number but they told her to go to a and e. G x

Hi check for body temperature first. If it's above normal the port may be infected . If no fever it may be a case of extravasation. Either way she needs immediate consultation.

Definitely she should ring her unit and let them know. That must have been scary

Yes we were scared. I think that you get used to the reactions and then when something new happens it can really freak you out. She is ok, it sounds like it may be bruising, she will call them on Monday. Thanks Choski, I hope you are feeling okay. Thanks for responding. G x

I would say go back to the chemo unit, have them take a look.
