Avastin and tumeric

I would like to jump on the tumeric bandwagon after all the good things that I have read. Does anyone know if you can take it whilst on avastin?

HiGleedy,

Don't know about with avastin, but have just read Tumeric can be sprinkled on roasted veg, added to rice, put in chicken soup or sprinkled over kale.

I always wonder how these spices can be incorporated into a normal diet, but that seems all good to me

Hi. I don't see why it should be a problem. I am Asian and we use turmeric in a lot of our cooking. In fact I have always added a pinch of it to milk whenever my kids are unwell. It does wonders!

If you reasearch you fill find that it's been used over centuries for its healing properties.

As long as you are using reasonable quantities it should be fine. Good luck :)

I always sprinkle it onto my roasted veges.

As Shamila says it is in most Aian food and we probably all grew up eating turmeric-I know I did.We always had it added to our rice as well and some of our dishes

Take care X

Hey Gleedy!

I too have been reading with interest a lot about Tumeric recently, even more so now since I got the borderline osteoporosis diagnosis as I am reluctant to go down the permanent drug route and its supposed to be great for bones . I decided that I would try turmeric/curcumin but the question was how to get it into me in a way that my system could absorb. Eating it is one way but I couldn't envisage getting enough of it from that so I went in search of a supplement. I found one that is made in Norway from natural ingredients and that has biosperine (black pepper) which aids in the absorption of the curcumin. I have been taking it for more than a week now and I don't know if its it but I can already feel a difference with regards to my bones/muscles. Since I finished chemo I have been having a lot of soreness in my joints/muscles when I get up in the morning and any time I have sat down for a period of time when I went to get up! That is much improved and getting better each day! As I said I don't know if its the curcumin but I am going to continue to take it all the same!!!

That sounds very promising, what is the name of the supplier. My husband now has a lot of joint pain following his chemo for prostate cancer, and I am thinking of finding similar for myself now that my chemo has just finished.

Many thanks

Hey Teresa,

The one I started is called Reumex and the link to the information is below. There are many supplements and I have no involvement with this one other than I decided to try it and so far it seems to be helping!

I did think the joint and muscle soreness was down to Chemo but I am not sure now and think it may be a combination of chemo and the osteopenia diagnosis but regardless I really do feel it has diminished quiet a bit since I started the supplement so I am going to keep taking it and hopefully it will get even better.

I was just reading your post a while ago about Pom T did you ever try it?

Good Luck!

Thank you for the details.

Yes he tried Pom T but got really bad intestinal cramping. So won't take it any more. As we have some left I am thinking to finish it. They say not to take whilst having chemo. So have been waiting to start it. The company is now doing research on its usefulness in other cancers.

Just scrolled down and seen this. Will have a look. x

That is very interesting, D, I am due to start Fosavance in about a week. Had to have dental work done first. I decided to take the tablet instead of injection of Prolia because Prolia can cause kidney problems. If I got that reaction, Avastin would be out for any future treatment. I do sprinkle Tumeric on my food. My sister has osteoporosis. My gp strongly recommended I take either or risk another fracture. They found one in my upper back. I am hesitant but as my wisdom tooth was loosening my dentist also suggested I needed something. So now this wisdom tooth will be coming out next Tuesday and I have to let it heal before I take the tablet. Meantime I have been taking vit d myself while sorting the teeth. I will continue the tumeric on my food. I am also on cholestrol tablets.

This is very interesting. I was telling mum about the powers of turmeric and she got some from Holland and Barrett but I wonder if the ones you have bought are better. I would be really interested to get some details on them please. I've always read that when using turmeric in cooking the black pepper is important. Thanks. Jane x

I am going to ask my Onc about taking it regularly when I have my next pre Avastin appointment..meanwhile I've started just tipping half a teaspoon into my dinner when it seems to fit xxL

Yes I'm going to ask too. I've started taking two tumeric capsules a day as an easy way to take it but it's still just the powder. As it isn't an antioxidant or affects blood vessels I'm hoping it's OK and only supportive as it's an anti inflammatory. My appt is not for another 6 weeks though so if yours is sooner could you let me know please. X

I just wanted to add to the other replies, I asked my onc about turmeric when I was on chemo and she said not to take it or lots of green tea as it is anti oxidant. I am now on Avastin and have asked her and the nutrition people at Macmillan and no one seems to know if it has any adverse effects with the drug, I gather some people have reactions to it but nothing to do with Avastin. I do take it as a capsule, I use grated root in smoothies and sprinkle it on food with black pepper. I hope this helps. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

That's really helpful. Thank you. I didn't realise it's an antioxidant. Sorry ladies. I hope everyone reads your post. X

That is good to know as green tea stains my teeth and I have to keep going to the dentist for cleaning. Re the antioxidant thing, I don't know how we are supposed to know what is anti-oxidant and what isn't, and I think they should give you a list of banned foods, whilst on chemo. Although all fruit and vegetables are anti-oxidant to some degree, they don't tell us to only eat them in moderation do they? It seems to be a bit of a minefield.

The recent Trust me I'm a Doctor programme little experiment showed no response from supplements but a marked response from using it in food.

It's easy to incorporate into anything wet - soups or stews - if you don't use it already in your cooking. Remember to have black pepper with it to activate it.

mskcc.org/cancer-care/integ...

says nothing about any interaction with avastin, but it does about a number of other drugs including cyclophosphamide.

I put a spoonful of turmeric in a quarter cup of chocolate protein drink. It doesn't taste bad at all because of the chocolate taste. I do this twice a day. I use Atkeins dark chocolate shake or any protein shake just to make it taste o.k.
