Hello,
As many of you know, Ovacome are passionate about seeking improvements to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of ovarian cancer. One of the many ways in which we do this is to provide advocacy opportunities for members to share their experiences with decision makers.
For the past three years we have produced local quality profiles using the latest data on the impact of ovarian cancer and patient experience of care throughout England. These profiles have been shared with MPs and local NHS managers by representatives from Ovacome and our support network. For example, in one area of the country a supporter used this resource effectively to lobby her MP and hospital chief executive. This resulted in the appointment of a new consultant and the development of a telephone helpline for GPs to help them to identify and refer suspected ovarian cancer cases.
To build on this work, we have been asking our members for their views on what changes would make the biggest difference to improving survival for women affected by ovarian cancer. The results and insights from this research have been used to write a report which has specific calls to action for the Government and the NHS. The report will be launched in Parliament on Wednesday 16 July (1.00-3.00pm) in Dining Room A of the House of Commons and we are inviting you to join us to help us make our case to your local MP.
Before the launch event, we will be hold a short workshop starting at 12.15pm, where we will provide attendees with a copy of the report, practical tips and materials on campaigning locally and an opportunity to meet with other supporters. We are delighted that Ovacome member, Fiona Mactaggart, Member of Parliament for Slough, has agreed to speak and offer her insights about how to engage effectively with politicians.
The launch event and workshop will be facilitated by MHP Health, who have supported Ovacome with our campaigning activities in recent years. This event has been supported by funding from Roche Products Ltd; full editorial control rests with Ovacome.
I do hope that you will be able to attend. Please note that lunch and refreshments will be provided and a short tour of the Houses of Parliament has been arranged. If you wish to bring a family member to support you they would be most welcome. If you have any questions, or to confirm you attendance, please contact Anna Appleton, on anna.appleton@mhpc.com or 020 3128 8127.
Yours sincerely,
The Ovacome Team.
