If you look up Drdu Eileen's profile in the Directory you'll be able to view all her posts and in one about six months ago she gives a lot of detail about Ibroprofen. I'm trying it but make sure I take it after a meal twice a day.

Hope this helps. xxx love Annie

Hi Jenny

I take 75mgs daily of aspirin.I also have lanzoprozole 15mgs daily to prevent ulcers etc which can be caused by aspirin.Although it is early days yet I am now10 months NED following frontline chemotherapy and feel it may help and won't do any harm.

Best wishes

Hi Jenny,

Eileen (Drdu) really is the right person to give advice on this, she has written a good blog on it and because she is a retired GP she knows what she is talking about, Ibruprofen is probably tagged so you will find her blog there, it is advisable to take one or the other aspirin or ibuprofen (but not both) you could pm her and I am sure she will reply.

Best wishes x G x :-)

Thankyou all I will look up Drdu but when I saw her blog it did not mention dosage unless old chemo. head missed it. lol xxx

Hi Jenny,

I tried to reply underneath your comment but it kept coming up with that silly 404 error Doh!

I know she has mentioned dosages on other peoples blogs (but it is like looking for a needle in a haystack) this is why I suggested to send her a private message she is ever so nice and will be glad to give you avice....I am sorry I am not much help but I mentioned taking this to my oncologist and he strongly recommended against taking it , so at the moment I have gone along with his advice...(she did say though that most oncologists will disapprove) it does help if you know what you are doing doesn't it ? Love x G x :-)

I had a very long conversation with my GP and oncologist about this and both said it was not an advisable thing to do, so I`d be very wary if I was you - speak with your oncologist before even thinking about this pleeeeease.

Warning - Both of these drugs should only be taken as a quick fix and should generally NOT be taken long term. The tummy tablets don`t always work and are not actually known to prevent long term side effects that could be dangerous. Over the counter medications should never be taken long term.

I think, if my memory is correct the recommended dose for the prevention of secondry cancer was x3 200mg over the counter tablets a day. I have no idea about the Asparin dosage but more than one tablet a day of either of these drugs is too much and long term use in high doeses can cause kidney failier.

This may offer good results as far as the cancer goes but like a lot of things that have not yet passed the test, they can bring on a whole load of other problems.

THEY DO HAVE SOME SEVERE SIDE EFFECTS FOR SOME PEOPLE.

Please take care, all the best with this love from Tina xxx

Although I don't take Ibuprofen, I have taken 1 Aspirin every day (325mg) for the last 14+ years. My GP recommended this after finishing chemo (and getting remission from Stage 4 Ovarian cancer)) and my Gyn/Onc saying I could stop taking Coumadin which was treatment for massive pulmonary embolisms and DVT - which presented at diagnosis. Thankfully still in remission, last Ca 125 was 8 (9800 at diagnosis). I take Celebrex daily too!

I hope this helps .... Sandy.

I asked my onc about this and he said he didn't know any of his colleagues over the age of fifty that were not taking paediatric dose aspirin, ie 75mg daily. It's not a high dose so I am taking it along with other supplements and think it is ok. I wouldn't take a higher dose of either drug without consulting my GP and don't want to do that at the moment. Hope you find what is right for you as everyone has an opinion based on their experiences and information, best wishes Amanda

Hi all.

I must agree that you have to be very careful if taking ibuprofen. I had the silly idea of adding in aspirin, having taken ibuprofen 400mg three times a day with food, and omeprazole 20mg daily, increasing occasionally to twice daily to protect stomach, with no problems for 21 months. Just after Christmas, I tried adding in aspirin 150mg daily, but that upset my stomach, so went down to 75mg daily. However by mid March, had to stop aspirin and ibuprofen as my stomach was upset - gastritis or perhaps worse. I am now only taking high dose omeprazole to heal my stomach, having talked with my GP.

I will probably go back on another anti-inflammatory more protective to the stomach, celecoxib, after my stomach is better. However I must point out I was ok with taking ibuprofen alone. The dose is a fairly substantial one, and it is possible that a lower dose would work. See my previous blogs. It is just that the proven effect was on people with arthritis who were taking anti-inflammatories and were found to have less cancer. So I took a reasonable dose for arthritis.

So it is vital to take aspirin or ibuprofen or celecoxib with food, and always take omeprazole or the like (eg lansoprazole) in good dose to protect the stomach. Even with the small aspirin (75mg), it would be advisable, and certainly if you are taking 150mg aspirin. 75mg may well be enough, but there is a slight doubt about this. ANYWAY DON'T TAKE BOTH ASPIRIN AND IBUPROFEN OR ANOTHER ANTI-INFLAMMATORY - that is the main thing, from my experience.

Will go to both my original blogs to update them, and emphasise this. My stomach is a lot better, and I hope to be back on an anti-inflammatory (NSAID), celecoxib soon. Will give you update.

I must also emphasise it doesn't work for everyone, but will certainly help some people.

Best wishes. By the way if you look for tags ibuprofen, aspirin, and NSAIDs you should find my blogs.

Further to my comments, you need to discuss all this with your oncologist and/or GP. It is not safe to start aspirin or ibuprofen soon after chemo. It depends on the person, so best to discuss with a doctor. Maybe 6 weeks after last chemo dose, but needs discussed with your doctor. 8 weeks probably fine. Don't do anything without talking to your doctor.

All best wishes.
