I am supposed to get braces for two years but I read you cannot take bisphosphonates or have osteoporosis injections or infusions before, during or after braces ?

Hi Raleigh,

I was an adult orthodontic patient for five years and was given Re-Clast very successfully during my full orthodontic treatment without issue.

As I did, my thoughts are to let both your dentist and orthodontist know that you will be taking/ given this medication for osteoporosis.

During treatment, they both regularly checked my jaw and teeth when I saw them.

I am now in permanent retainers on both my top and bottom teeth. I continue to take my calcium, D3, Olive Leaf Extract and drank plenty of water as directed.

After a number of years, my osteo/ endocrinologist and I decided that a three dose course of Re-Clast was needed.

Today I got a super bone density report but will finish my third dose as agreed upon.

I just make my dentist aware that I have been given this medication and he keeps an eye on my jaw and looks loose teeth/ issue- none.

Remember that every patient is different, but when in doubt, chat with your doctor and dentist and get their thoughts.

Think positive and concentrate on the beautiful smile that the end will bring.

Please feel free to reach out at any time and let me know how you are doing.

did you doctors choose Reclast bc the infusion method my dentist friend said is the only only that’s not supposed to affect the dental issues? I don’t know if that’s accurate though

did you do any other medicine before Reclast? And what is the three times concept, is that once a year for three years?

Hi Raleigh,

Re-Clast was suggested for me as it was thought to be the best osteoporosis therapy for my needs.

After taking a break, I had a deterioration in my bone density. My osteo/ endo felt that giving me three more doses would be beneficial, which is where we are.

I haven't had any issues with Re-Clast.

I drink plenty of water prior to infusion and after.

It's also been given to me via a 60 minute drip which is safer than the 15 minute.

Personally, having to receive one dose a year is so much easier on my lifestyle as well.

Have a talk with your doctor's as to what would be best for you.

Again, feel free to reach out..

does your insurance cover it or do you pay cash for it

My insurance has paid for this in full. If you have an issue, remember that swallowing a pill doesn't work for you, right?

Either way, it was decided that this was the best drug therapy for me.

did your insurance make you try the oral medications ?

Not at all. Way back my doctor felt that this was the best medication for me. I don't know how he wrote it up for the insurance, but I had no problem.

I do know others who were told to try the oral, but don't know what insurance they had.

I know that this is a frustrating decision.

Can't stress enough to speak to the prescribing doctor and see what he/ she feels is the best medication for you.

I read that Reclast was in a lawsuit because they didn't release info about it's possible cause of jaw bone death. I've recently been diagnosed with 3rd stage Osteoporosis & was referred for Reclast IV fusion, now I don't know if Reclast comes in oral &IV fusion but I'm on hold with any treatments right now, as I have jaw bone loss already, DDD, scoliosis &now found Tarlov cysts which are cysts that fill with spinal fluid in the big lower tail bone area& am waiting for my PCP to ask a neurologist about them. In the meantime the Endocrinologist referred me to Reclast IV fusion again. All the specialists think their orders are the top priority, told her I wasn't going to do anything till the other serious stuff was at least looked into. Too many specialists with too many things wrong many related to CP, causing inflammation, malabsorption, etc. Head's gonna blow

I get it, so many different treatments, most with serious side effects. If I only had Osteoporosis I might get that, but have a# of other debilitating health issues that probably contributed to my Osteoporosis that I'm seeing other specialists about& now might need spine surgery again, so my dental work will probably not get done. Finally started searching for just cosmetic teeth to fit over what mess I have left . So probably won't be posting much anymore. In 3 other support groups, including Chronic Pain, depression & anxiety &more. Good luck all
