Newly Diagnosed

I was diagnosed with Osteopenia in July of 2018. I was told to continue with Vitamin D and Calcium daily. It did absolutely nothing.

After doing some research, and with the numbers I had, I should have definitely been scanned again before 3 years/3 months later.

November 2021 my left femur went "up" 0.9 points from -1.9 to -2.8.

Right femur wasn't measured in 2018, but was -2.7 in 2021.

I received no treatment recommendations and as you can see I should have definitely been on ANYTHING besides just VitD/Ca+.

I'm a bit angry about the whole thing and scared I'll be breaking some bones when I fall from my Menier's Drop Attacks. I just saw the nurse practitioner and AGAIN, no repeat scan, with numbers like that from 3+ years ago! She offered Prolia when I have 3 of the 4 contraindications. I had to research it myself and found myself here. Glad I found you!

I'm sorry for the angry touch. I'm really a nice person, I swear! ❤️‍🩹

I understand how you feel. I was diagnosed with osteopenia many years before menopause and was told the same thing, i.e. calcium and Vitamin D. I took both regularly and continued at the osteopenia level, but no one told me that you are most at risk for significant bone loss once you hit menopause. No bone density tests were conducted and I crossed over to osteoporosis in the years following menopause. I was angry too. I expected more from my primary doctor. I had to let it go and focus on what steps I can take now. I didn't want to go on medication if I could avoid it. I modified my diet and am trying to get most of my bone needs through food. I was maintaining bone density when I had my last scan. I'm due for another in June and hoping that my approach is working. Hang in there. Your anger is legitimate. Now it's time for you to take control and it looks like that's exactly what you're doing! You've got this.

we can vent together!!!

I had osteopenia in 2021, I was told what you were….plus tums were an ok supplement!!! I was 54, not in menopause - yet - 7 months with no period. Now in menopause.

Fast forward to know and it is worst. With OP in my spine. My care team totally misled me when I asked for help 2 years ago and was overwhelmed by the internet. One person said not to walk 🙄

I switched supplements and increasing strength training. No meds yet. I am encouraging my PCP to look at some more work up.

I strongly recommend watching DR Doug Lucas’ videos on YouTube. They are highly informative and he is an orthopedic surgeon who changed practice type to help. No gimmicks. He can’t treat you but it’s info you can share with your PCP. I am.

I was so mad last week, I didn’t sleep.

I get it.

I hope you get answers and good help!

❤️

No worries, Maria1360. Your situation sounds really frustrating. I would consider taking your results to another doctor for a second opinion

Calcium + D3 only gets calcium into the bloodstream. Adding vitamin K2 Mk 4 gets it to the bones. Certain drugs accelerate bone loss, in which case you may need Prolia too. GLTA
