Reclast Infusion

Hi,

My Dexa scan showed osteopenia I have fractured both my hips and right foot. I canceled my infusion today because my Dexa really didn’t show osteoporosis yet and the bad reviews on the infusion. Anybody have information on their infusion experience? Thank you. Stephanie

Do they think your breaks are stress fractures or did you have an accident that caused the breaks? I don’t think osteopenia would cause those types of breaks! Would you mind sharing your numbers? Sounds like something else is going on that you should question!

One important thing to consider is that your DXA t-score is a statistical measure -- and relative measure. If you have had an osteoporotic fracture, you have osteoporosis, not just a probability of osteoporosis. A fracture changes the conversation.

If you look at the NORA (Natioanl Osteoporosis Risk Assessment) research, you will see that fractures happen at ALL bone densities not just in the osteoporosis range. And in fact, more happen in the osteopenia range.

What you are doing with the meds is preventing fracture. And a previous fracture puts you at higher risk of a future fracture. A couple of studies from UC Davis showed that "Breaking a bone causes bone density losses throughout the body, not just close to the site of the fracture...."

I would suggest that you use one of the available fracture risk calculators (FRAX or American Bone Health's FRC) to determine your fracture risk. Your DXA t-score is only one of several variables to consider. Previous fracture is another really big fracture.

Very well said! Here is a link to the American Bone Health Fracture Risk Calculator: americanbonehealth.org/calc...

I took the test but was surprised that it didn't ask about my spine score, only femur

I recently had my first reclast infusion; I was reluctant, put it off for a long time, and did a lot of research. I had the infusion and it has been fine. I did have some more aching in some joints for a few days, but otherwise it has been completely uneventful. I will hope it makes a difference in slowing bone loss; won't know until the next DEXA. I really needed to take a step because I have significant osteoporosis and had been vigilant about diet and exercise; though it kept the bone mass relatively stable between the last two scans, my bone mass is way down overall. I have a doctor overseeing this who is excellent and whom I trust. He explained that reclast is the "least toxic" of all the pharmaceutical options that remain open to me. ( I cannot tolerate oral meds for this.)

I’m deciding whether to take reclast also and love hearing what your dr said. What are your t scores when you started? Does he or she think reclast works better than orals to improve bone density? I’m 53. How old are you?

I had a very negative experience with Reclast as it caused chronic G.I. symptoms.

Have your GI issues improved now?
