Greetings! Has anyone had success finding a healthcare provider who is open to alternative treatments, or at least having an open minded discussion to review all the non-medical options? My advise so far is take Fosamax or Prolia without any deep discussion to determine how I feel about it, my life style, diet, etc. If it turns out I must go the med route I will, but not blindly. I'm bringing the Duquesne MOTS study to my rheumatologist tomorrow (first visit), so thanks to all who referred to it on this board.
P.S. Is the Bone Density Solution program by Shelly Manning legit? All I can find about it are ads.
Have a read of my story. It includes what I found in the way of useful alternative methods of building bone density. Please note I did not at any point purchase plans, supplements, etc, from anyone claiming miracles!
I just went to a naturopathic doctor who graduated from Bastyr University in Washington. He has a special interest in building bone and said he had an 80 yo patient who was successful when I asked him if I could get results. Here’s what he suggested for me. Lose fat, build muscle. At 164 lbs., my fat percentage was a whopping 40%! He recommended working up to wearing a 20-25 lb. weighted vest. I am starting at 16 lbs., my choice. I have specific exercises to do to build muscle - all strength training. They include pushups from a counter, working up to floor ones, squats, walking lunges, Superman/woman jumps, and lots of heel drops (standing on tiptoes and drop back down on heels). Anything pylometric works. I am taking a bone supplement called Osteoforce Supreme along with a few other things for my specific needs. Previously I had switched to plant based calcium that did nothing. Another ND suggested Whole 30 for my diet. I am doing a modified version by eating cleaner and going to a more plant based diet. I was also recommended to do intermittent fasting several days a week - skipping onemeal in a day with absolutely no snacking. I think this is more to help burn fat. I am hoping this will help with my osteoporosis. For me, he said walking alone would not be enough to stimulate bone growth. When asked about plant- based bio-identical hormones, he suggested one squirt of a cream. I am still doing my own research on that and it’s safety. He said what he gave me would be fine. I have read that it can help with bone formation. I am starting
slow, but keeping my fingers crossed. I can’t bring myself to taking Reclast or Prolia. I am trying to live as healthy as I reasonably can and still enjoy life at my age of 65 years. Sorry to be so long, but hope this gives folks some options to explore.
Thanks! I'll reply with details when I get back from camping trip.
