Reaction Times

If you've strayed from the bland diet path and eaten some foods you shouldn't or had a glass of wine for example, how long does it take for a bad reaction to occur? Immediately? Few hours later? Next day?

I've never had an immediate reaction, but depending on how far I've strayed and what time of day.....it can be a few hours or the next day. For me it's usually a very scratchy throat and speech not great followed by (sometimes) a horrid taste in my mouth for a day or so

Thanks for your response Usedtobeyounger. Following endoscopy I was told the results were normal so I was puzzled that I was prescribed Lansoprazole. As it did not agree with me, I informed my GP I would try to control symptoms through a better diet and he agreed. At a later appointment with a nurse for a cholesterol check, she told me that GERD was on my medical record although I'd never been told this. Anyway, I have recently been on holiday and it was a bit of a challenge food wise. I had some foods that I had been avoiding and, lo and behold, I had no burning in my throat, no discomfort at night and slept better than I had in ages! I'm now wondering if I have caused more acid by the strict diet I followed or I've still to experience the backlash from not eating the bland foods!

We are all different aren't we?? Not one size fits all. Because LPR doesn't necessarily give symptons, you could probably eat many things and not experience problems, although that doesn't mean your not free of any internal changes. With GERD I believe you still get feelings of heartburn, indigestion or pain....probably these would happen very quickly after eating a trigger food....

Hi there! I hope things are going well for you. I noticed in your profile that you exercise. I go to the gym several times a week. I recently increased my activity on the treadmill and, it may just be coincidence but I started to get discomfort in my upper abdomen. If felt like cramp or spasms. I hope I've not caused damage to my diaphragm but I love going to the gym and would be gutted if the pain is a direct consequence of exercise. Do you have any discomfort in your abdomen following exercise?

I'm just about to start re-introducing different food groups after following a Low fod-map diet for 6 weeks. Nutritionist that I spoke to said try the new food over 3 days - a little for the first day, a bit more the second, and as much as you like on the third day. You will then know if that food group is causing problems!Sally

Thanks Sally! That's helpful information. I've discovered that I actually can eat tomatoes as well as some tomato pasta sauces, which is great! Best of luck in re-introducing foods. I hope it gives you more options.
