I was diagnosed with silent reflux by my ENT consultant a couple of days ago.. a bit of a shock because I only saw him for ongoing ear issues and horrendous hay fever and no other symptoms other than a husky voice which was assumed to be due to my hay fever until the consultant examined me.. as it was a full on appointment, the only advice I got was a leaflet with a bit of information about it and some foods to avoid, pretty much all of it I do anyway as I have non alcoholic fatty liver disease.. and peptic liquid to take after meals and before bed.
One question I have, which got me thinking, was one of the things in the leaflet was to limit butter… I only use a very thin layer anyway and rarely use it at all where possible.. I use the Lurpak Lighter one but was just wondering if anyone had any recommendations of anything else/better?
Any other tips? I’m doing as much research as I can into this as it’s all new to me but I’m finding Google so contradictory and confusing!

Hello Jessie_02
I was diagnosed last year and like you I was only given a leaflet but I also had a prescription for Gaviscon and Omeprazole. As time went on I realised I had to take mmy health into my own hands. Changing my diet has been the best thing I've ever done....but I've never changed using butter! I don't use anything that has the word light or lighter in its name so you can guess I use full fat variety. You have made me think about it tho as I know to keep off "fatty" foods. I will follow this thread with interest. I bought a book by Dr Jonathan Aviv and that was my change of diet starting point.

It’s so bad isn’t it! The leaflet didn’t explain much either and only a few foods to avoid, I’ve found more via Google!
He suggested Gaviscon, but I can’t afford to keep buying it so my GP put the generic liquid on prescription for me. If you don’t mind me asking, what is the Omeprazole?
Butter wasn’t even one of the things I’d even think to change, it’s only because it said in the leaflet! I’ve always used the Lurpak Lighter anyway…
Ooh thank you for the book recommendation, I’ll check it out!
Thank you

Omeprazole is another ppi that Dr's give out on prescription. Taken about 30 Mins before food it suppresses acid in your stomach. I stopped at one point but the dr recommended going back on. I was on a higher dose originally. One of my problems is that my saliva glands swell up on a daily basis. I've had ultra sound done which always comes up with "nothing untoward". But not why they swell. I suspect its pepsin which just means eating very carefully!!

Ah okay thank you! Oh gosh that sounds so scary! I’ve had no symptoms, except I’m horrendously congested at the moment from hay fever and then my voice went husky and I kept losing it… It was put down to hay fever but when the ENT consultant checked out my throat he said I’ve got silent reflux, I started the peptic liquid that day and the following morning my voice was pretty much back to normal!

what country do you live in? I only ask because I get Gaviscon Advance on prescription.

I’m UK… I guess peptic liquid is the cheapest for them to prescribe?
Just got this from Dr Google when I asked for peptic liquid
"Yes, Acidex and Peptac are similar to Gaviscon. These medicines are reflux suppressants. They work in the same way as Gaviscon, by reducing acid in your stomach and preventing excess acid escaping into your food pipe. They generally work as well as Gaviscon and have similar side effects".
So, you're on the right kind of stuff anyway.
I only eat foods with a pH over 5.
You'll find your way.......

That makes sense!
Thank you so much for your replies and help/advice… this came completely out of the blue so a lot to learn X
Hi! The only symptom I can pin down is that I had such a horse voice and kept losing it.. I’m seriously congested and my nose is all inflamed and swollen due to severe hay fever so my voice was put down to that until I saw my ENT consultant for ongoing issues with my ears, he took one look and said I had silent reflux.. I took gaviscon that night and the next day I woke up with my voice back! I’ve had no other symptoms at all which is quite scary, and only got given a basic leaflet with a few foods to avoid.
Good luck figuring your symptoms out, I hope you can get some answers.
are you sure it's not histamine issues, that's what my issue turned out to be with silent reflux. Sinus and ear problems, which caused feeling off balance at times, stiff neck and other symptoms.
How I got rid of it was a study I read where it said sniff white vinegar a few times a day and also gargle with diluted white vinegar a few times a day, by the 4 th day my histamine issue was gone.
I have had silent reflux for several years.Sort of worked it out myself as I was getting a croaky voice, coughing which wasn't an infection, and then pain in my throat, and often ears. I had been told I had a large hiatus hernia, and was taking pantoprazole similar to omeprazole, but suits me better.I did look up recommended diets etc, and concluded that you would have a very boring life if you cut out everything that they suggest. It has been a bit of trial and error to work out what I could tolerate and what to avoid.I have cut out citrus fruits, and very spicy foods. I do have the occasional glass of wine, and can tolerate more foods now.
I now take one pantoprazole a day and have Peptac liquid. It is the NHS version which is about half the strength of Gaviscon, but I take it at night. The ENT person I saw said that Gaviscon/ Peptac is best for reflux in the throat, as it stops the reflux regurgitating into the throat from the stomach. I feel I have it sort of under control now that I know more about what is causing it.
