Hi fellow sufferers

I have Lung probs including Bronchiectasis. I have always had a touch of acid reflux but not on a regular basis really. I had a camera down my throat years ago and it was disclosed I had a small Hyitas hernia. I have thought for the last few months had lots of mucous in my throat and also in my sinuses. I had mistaken it at first my Bronchiectasis flaring up as I have quite a lot of mucous anyway. It was waking me up so early in the morning. I can honestly say that I have always been very proactive and positive with my lung conditions but this has really really got me down. I went to the dr who sent me off with a steroid nose spray. My respiratory nurse gave me antyhistomines. 2 months on and trying to see if this was being caused by pollen, dust mites or cat dander I booked myself in for allergy blood tests and a private ENT appointment. Wait list on NHS 1 year! Consultation cost me £220. Best money I have spent as he told me it was silent reflux and to try Gaviston Advanced after every meal and before I go to bed. I have been doing that for a week and also my Omeprozole too? Not doing too much so far but I am trying to go Dairy Free and eating a healthier diet more veg and fruit. I gave up chocolate about 2 weeks ago and have not had any wine for a long time. Going back to the Docs and am going to ask to see a Gastro Doc. Guess I will have to pay again. Anybody else on here with this horrible condition and what meals do you all eat? I am vegetarian and never had too much fatty or spicy so rather fed up I have got this especially with Bronchiectasis

Thanks for reading

Best wishes

Mona

Dr.Jamie Kaufman's Acid Reflux Diet. If you follow her alkaline diet advice you may get relief.

Hi, sorry to hear about your symptoms. I take 15mg Lansoprazole before lunch and 10mg Gaviscon 5 minutes before bed. Don't drink any water after taking the Gaviscon as it forms a raft barrier against the acid reflux coming up. I also sleep propped up to help gravity keep things down. Having to sleep semi-upright in one position does make it harder to get to sleep, but after a year or so my body is adjusting to it. Hope you get things resolved soon, regards.

Hello I was ‘diagnosed’ with bronchiectasis in Feb this year . I take Carbocisteine 2 capsules twice a day . As yet seen no one but have GPappt tomorrow.

I joined the local support group last month which is singing group twice a month and a lecture once a month. They are all so friendly. Also have found the helpline very helpful I so far have no acid reflux but I do take omeprazole in the morning too .

This hot dry weather is awful no air so to speak. Keep safe

I diagnosed myself really, as I was coughing, croaky throat, sharp acid feeling in my throat. I already knew I had a large hiatus hernia, and was taking Pantoprazole as protection. I increased it to 2 a day after talking to GP about it.If you look at all the things they advise you not to eat for acid reflux you'd have a very boring diet. You can test out whether you can tolerate somethings. I had a lot of help from a speech and language therapist as I was having choking fits with things going down the wrong way, and also an ENT doctor who discovered one side of my vocal chords was not working properly.. She did also say that gaviscon is much the best thing for silent reflux.

Chocolate and peppermint are not good things because they relax the sphincter at the top of the stomach, which surprised me.

Have you tried raising the head of your bed at night, either wooden blocks or wedge pillows so the acid doesn't come back up at night.

It's really trying out what works for you. I feel I managing it at the moment, but it has taken time. I luckily have a very good GP and have had help from the NHS. Good luck.

Hi Jean 46

Thank you for your reply. I have raised the bed up and I have a wedge too! I do agree it takes a while to get use to sleeping like it. I wake up every morning at 6 sliding down the bed! The horrible mucous in my throat wakes me up anyway.

My Doctor was useless and just sat there saying o dear o dear take the nose drops and come back in 2 months and we could get an ENT appointment! I got my own blood tests to see this was not an allergy and got the private ENT .

I do agree with you about the boring diet! I had a terrible night last night I think because I had feta cheese for tea? I am trying to do a dairy free but needed something to put on my salad. I am struggling though to know what to eat at present? I have sent for the Acid Reflux cookbook so hope I can get some ideas.? I think perhaps you are right about seeing what gives me the acid.

I do have a Hyitas Hernia which I think is the main problem. Gaviston is helping a bit but hopefully my appointment with the Gastro Doc can help me.

It’s been the most miserable summer for me. With my lung probs I do usually get a respite but not this summer with this awful post nasal drip and silent reflux.

Take care

I wonder if you might have raised it a bit too much. I didn't slide down the bed really. I think there is advice on how much to raise it on some silent reflux pages. Possibly also a pillow that wraps round you and supports you but is less firm than a wedge pillow. The other thing suggested along with the diet is chewing gum which is alkaline, and has Sodium Bicarbonate. I have tried Wrigleys Extra White Bubblemint, sometimes after a meal when I have felt acid in my throat, or during a car journey, when I can't get hold of anything else to neutralise the acid.I have a Hiatus Hernia, which is quite large, but don't have Bronchiectasis, though I have other issues. It is sometime quite difficult to work out what is causing what problem. I do hope you find something that's helpful.
