I wonder if anyone has noticed decline in their distance vision from taking ppis? I have been going to eye hospital regularly over last year ( retinal tears, active pvd, changes to retina so at high risk of getting macular holes). But through all this my short sightedness has not changed until recently.
Consultant is a bit flummoxed but I realise my vision has diminished since been on esomeprazole for my suspected silent reflux. It may be a coincidence. I have been tapering off anyway so am struggling again. GP thinks I should stay on them because of my current anxiety but don’t want to add to my current eye problems. I wonder whether anyone else has noticed a link with eyesight?
Thanks

Hi, I have been on PPI's for six years and have noticed my eyes are generally drier than usual and occasional blurring. I find it difficult to produce tears. Especially blurred when I wake up. Also they have affected my hearing. . I envy people who take no meds at all, they don't realise how fortunate they are.
yes it must be good to not take pills but I’m willing to if work! I have had dry eye due to glands not working for 20 years now so can’t blame the pills for that and have to put gel in eyes at night as damaged my cornea once when couldn’t get lid open one morning. But I’m ok during the day I thought but wouldn’t be surprised if it’s just more surface dryness. My worry is that I have just been diagnosed with macular problems and don’t want to make it worse with these tablets. On the other hand I want to be able to lie down - if only because I expect will have to lie on my front for some days after eye surgery and I want to retain as much sight as possible. So struggling on - it’s only 5 days without pills and I plan not to eat again today in hope get sleep tonight!
I have been on PPI's for many years ,my vision has deteriorated but just put that down to age.In 2016 I was diagnosed with hearing loss.I read that PPI's can make things worse .
Yes and sensitivity to sunlight. However, I don't associate it necessarily with PPI use. Could be a lot of thing, including other meds, cataracts or simply aging. But do let us know if you go off them and there is an improvement.

I have been on various PPI' s for years ,have hearing loss(2016) and wear glasses for close up work.put diminishing eyesight down to age.
Hi - well am off the ppi. Vision still blurred so can say it’s not the fault of ppi but my eye consultant thinks it a bit of vitreous in my eye that is stuck in middle of vision. Am hoping it will shift without any more retinal tears. Fortunately my other eye vision good at moment but has macular issue so am keeping fingers crossed that my left eye holds out long enough for my right eye to clear. Life’s a lottery.
I have a history of retinal tears etc. in both eyes, and related problems seemingly with no obvious cause according to Moorfields, but I did some research online and came up with a PPI link, which I had actually been taking for hiatus hernia for years, until I stopped it because it wasn't helping and I read that it eventually causes that which you are taking it to prevent! I'd never even heard of retinal tears until I got them followed by no end of related eye problems!!!!! I don't and won't take any of the prazoles now.
That’s interesting. I had my tears before I started the drugs so can’t blame the ppi for them ( just being very short sighted with vitreous detachment process taking years in both eyes). But as the ppi was causing evening regurgitation I am off them. Back to feeling in oesophagus and cough and chills but glad to be off the ppi! I was really given them by cardiologist as experiment to confirm that I have reflux so the jury is out on that really. Ps my dentist got his retinal tears after weight lifting and he has no other eye issues of high myopia.
