Does anyone else think Lansoprazole make the symptoms worse.

I have hiatus hernia and recently got diagnosed with esophagitis after finding the feeling that food was sticking in my throat. Dr has given me Lansoprazole 30mg twice daily. I have been on the tablets for a month now and I find that first thing in the morning I can eat breakfast but later in the day I get a feeling like my thoat is tightening up and get lots of mucus in my throat so I find it difficult to eat so I stick to soft foods like eggs, soup. I find I cannot take my evening tablet so have just been having one a day instead of two. On a couple of occasions I have forgotten to take my tablet and strangely I seem to have a better day and find I can eat more but as soon as I take my tablet the next day the mucus returns. I am now thinking that the tablets are not helping. Two Dr's on youtube have said that these tablets are bad for you long term and that taking 2 teaspoons of Apple cider vinegar in a glass of water keeps the acid at bay. I also find Coconut water helps. I am thinking of stopping the tablets but wanted to find out if anyone else has had problems with the tablets and stopped taking them, how did you get on?

Honestly, if you finding it easier to NOT take the tablet, then do so. I reakon whatever works for you is ok, especially if you have an alternative. Good luck xxx

Hi, I have been taking lansoprazole for nearly a year now for my acid reflux problems. I also have a hiatus hernia. At first I was on 30mg once a day in the morning, my symptoms have got better over time, I no longer keep bringing up bile after I eat,but I also changed my diet at the same time, no spicy food, foods with tomato in them,,no fried food,no chocolate,no crisps or sweets.but the symptom I can never get rid of is some days I am constantly swallowing because it feels like I have fluid in my throat. Sometimes I forget to take my tablet in the morning and sometimes I don't take them for a few days,as I don't want to take them all the time. Then about four months ago started having terrible pains in my abodomen and back on left hand side in the early hours of the morning,I could not lie down or sit down because of pain so had to walk around my flat for hours at a time in pain plus sweating and being sick, then was put on 30mg lansoprazole twice a day morning and night which I did not want to do because of the risk of the damage they can do to your bones after long time use, they did not make any difference to my pains so after two weeks went back to one tablet in the morning. Had a CT scan and it showed up a few things then my pain stopped all of a sudden, fingers crossed lol. I still take lansoprazole in the morning but not every morning as I want to come off them. My symptoms have got better over time but whether that is down to lansoprazole or a change of diet I'm not sure, because recently I have reintroduced some cakes and crisps and sweets that I eat that seem ok. But sometimes the sweets make my constant swallowing worse,it's so hard to give up things that you like lol. I hope your symptoms get better,in the end I think it's up to the person to take the decision to lower their dose or not. Sometimes doctor's just give out repeat prescriptions like sweets. I definitely don't want to take tablets for the rest of my life, but the symptoms may get worse again if I stop,so will just have to go back to them again. Hopefully we can be ok just through diet alone even if it is bland.Anyway hope your symptoms get better.

Thank you for your reply. I agree Dr's are too ready to give out these tablets with numerous side effects.and that are dangerous, if you take them too long. I have now stopped taking them and taking ACV and although its only been 3 days I seem to be doing better although I still have this horrible lump in my throat especially after eating. I watched Dr Berg on Youtube who gives great advice and there are others who all say ACV is good. Dr Berg suggests 2 teaspoons of ACV with the mother in a glass of water and raising the head of the bed approx 4 inches to stop the acid coming into your throat in the night. He also suggests Calcium Lactate as he says many are low on calcium which can cause the lump in the throat feeling. Its worth a try as I really do not want to take the tablets. I agree that its hard not being able to eat all the food you like. Its got so bad for me that I crave foods that normally I would not have lol! I have lost over 2 stone which is the only silver lining as I needed to lose the weight. They also say Sauerkraut is good for the gut and also to take a probiotic. They say a Keto diet is good for people with acid reflux.Dr Berg does several videos on this subject so its worth a look. Anyway I hope you feel better soon and you do not need to take those tablets again. Although I would not wish this condition on my worst enemy it is nice to know I am not alone. Take care. xx

Hi, it's good that you seem to have found something better to take,I haven't heard of Acv, what is it?. I know the craving for certain foods drive you mad lol, I have a wedge pillow by Kally sleep, they are good. Sometimes I feel there is something in my throat after eating, but not all the time. Have you thought of a larynscopy,it's similar to an endoscopy but goes in your nose and looks at the throat. I've had an endoscopy but I'm not sure they see the top of the throat. Take care and hope your symptoms improve.

Hi its Apple Cider Vinegar with the Mother. You can get it from health food shops or supermarkets (Organic is best) taken in water. I was a little scared of taking it at first but so far its not made my acid reflux worse . If it does give you stomach pains then they say take wheatgrass juice or powder in water and check you haven't got an ulcer. I looked at the books for acid reflux diet and the recipes look really boring as no garlic or onions which I love but I suppose if thats what we have to do to get better then so be it. It says in one book that once you have got the reflux in control you can introduce some of your favourite foods (in moderation) so that is something to look forward to : ) I will also try the Calcium Lactate and see if that works. Take care.

I have been put on Lanzoprazole recently and I'm not sure if it's helping either. I would suggest you read Dr.Kaufman's Acid Reflux Diet. She explains the symptoms you describe as the result off acid reflux and recommends following a low acid diet. The foods that you are eating could be causing the throat symptoms. Good luck.

Thank you! If you are having abdominal pain, have they checked you to see if you have an ulcer? I will take a look at Jamie Kaufman and Dr Avid as all help is needed. I hope you feel better soon. Take care xx

Hi there,I've been suffering from acid reflux in a severe way since last September. I was on omeprazole and they worked well, but out of nowhere they just stopped working. The doctor then put me on Lansoprazol. That drug made me much worse. I just couldn't tolerate it. I'm now just trying other alternatives.

Hi I stopped taking the Lansoprazole because it was not helping and making me worse I am now taking ACV and got advised to get some Calcium Lactate (hard to find in the UK but I found some on Amazon in powder form) and Wheatgrass powder. Also Licorice with DGL chewable tablets (not Licorice sweets) as it can also help with acid reflux. Lift the head of your bed (not mattress) 4 to 6 inches. I have put books under the head of my bed to help keep the acid down at night and I do feel a little better although still have this lump after meals but it does not last as long as before when it took hours to disappear. I also find i am now eating more than when I was on the tablets. Take a look at Dr Berg on Youtube as he has some good advice (he does several videos on the subject) cut out coffee and Tea and spicy food. Dr's never tell us about alternatives and just push the tablets. I hope that helps and you find something that helps you. Take care x I have put a link to a video.

Thank you very much for your reply and the link. To be honest I would try anything. It's an ongoing problem I know for many people. I am considering surgery as a last resort. Do you have any thoughts on surgery for this complaint?

Hi I do not have any information on surgery but its something I want to avoid. I would just watch your diet. If you look on the net it will tell you what food to avoid. They say a Keto diet helps. Make a diary of all the food you eat and see what brings on the reflux and also avoid alcohol : ( Lifting your bed will help as reflux is worse at night and that is when it can damage your esophagus also do not eat after 6pm. If you decide to try the Apple cider vinegar with the Mother (Mother is the bacteria that is added) then just have 2 teaspoonfulls in a glass of water, do not have it neat, although I got talking to a lady today who also has acid reflux and she is a nurse and she advised me not to have the apple cider until my esophagus has healed as although its good for acid reflux she said it could irritate my esophagus while it is still inflamed but if your esophagus is okay then ACV should be okay but like all things, it trial and error and you just have to find what suits you. I have just started having the licorice tablets so I will see how I go with them and update you. Take care.

Do talk to your doctor before coming of the meds if you can. Stopping PPIs quickly can cause a rebound increase in acid reflux. A step down protocol may be advised. Hope this link works. nhs.uk/Services/UserControl...
