Coping with Possible Learning Disability

My son will be 4 next month and we are going through the realization he has some kind of learning disability. My wife is really struggling to come to terms with this and can only see the worst possible outcomes for him and it is affecting her mental health and her relationship with our son. This is not helped by the fact he shows much more negative behaviour and is less focused with her than when I spend time with him. I am trying everything I can to be supportive but am running out of things I can do or say to help short of giving up work.Does anyone have experience of a similar situation and can offer any advice please?

Hello SL1984 ,

Sorry to hear this. It sounds like a really difficult time for you all.

Do you have much in the way of support as a family?

Have you and your wife approached many organisations for support? I will list a few of these below which may be a good starting point:

norfolksendiass.org.uk/

family-action.org.uk/

nansa.org.uk/sensational-fa...

Also with him being four, if you haven't already, you need to approach the SENCO of the school you are hoping he will go to discuss how transition will work for him. It is never too early to put things in to place for him.

I wonder if some peer support would be helpful for her. Is she also seeking support for her own mental health?

Thanks Rachel

Hi Rachel, thanks for your reply and the suggestions of organisations which may be helpful, we have not contacted anyone for support yet other than the health visitors but have discussed that peer support would be helpful. Unfortunately we don't have any family locally so that does make things quite challenging. Our son attends a nursery attache to the school we are hoping he will attend so the SENCO will be engaging through them.
