19mo son doesn’t say very much.

Hi there 😊

It’s my first post on here. I have a 19 month old son who doesn’t say much. He says mamma and dadda and will shake/ nod his head and attempt to say yes when he wants something.

He will point, find characters in stories he’s read with you and can follow simple instructions, so I know he can hear us and understands us. He just won’t copy us if we ask him to have a go at saying something.

Do you think there’s anything I could do? He walked at 11 months so people have said he’s likely an early walker and late talker but I don’t know! Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks 😊

Welcome to Health Unlocked. Thank you for your message. It sounds like your son's development is moving in the right direction, and you are already doing plenty of good things, such as sharing stories, checking he can follow simple instructions etc.

Offering choices always works really well, especially introducing the concept around snack times, for example "would you like a biscuit or banana." and if they nod/point at one, reply with "oh, you chose the biscuit" reinforcing the word etc.

Some libraries offer groups specifically to promote speech and language development, and you can borrow story sacks which are really useful to aid speech: norfolk.gov.uk/children-and...

There are lots of useful suggestions on: justonenorfolk.nhs.uk/salt and you are always welcome to call 0300 300 0123 and we can chat about speech development in a bit more detail.
