bile reflux

I thought I would bring you all up to speed on my endoscopy yesterday ( Friday 15 March ).

I have to say I was surprised by the results, I have Bile reflux, something I didn’t even know existed. It was a bit of a shock if I am honet. So me being me , I read up about it when I got home, as most things it can lead to cancer if not gotton under control. This panicked me as my brother had stomach cancer. I have looked at how to reduce bile production and from what I can tell it’s following a low fat diet. But , I was wondering if any of you lovely people hav come across this for yourselves and if you have , how have you dealt with it? I would appreciate any advice and guidance.

thanks guys.

June.

Hi,I too have been recently diagnosed with bile reflux along with gastritis/ duodenitis.I joined this forum hoping to find others experience of it as it doesn’t seem very well known condition.

Prescribed Famotodine & Pantoprazole but still get symptoms,I have been tested for H pylori (before commencing medication) which was negative. All my problems started after gall stone lodged in bile duct, had gallbladder out 3 months ago & still having issues so endoscopy performed & results as above. No real practical advice offered from consultants except take medication, sorry can’t give you any more information but good luck & hope someone else has more advice.

Ahh thank you for replying. I havnt spoken to anyone as of yet, it's a follow up in clinic. But they have suggested a stretch again, I'm all for that ! I had my gallbladder out in 2009, so am surprised its taken until now to emerge. I was taking amitriptyline but have stopped that, I take 40mg omeprazole, but apparently ppi's don't do anything for this, just a low fat diet, I have researched and green tea with honey comes up a lot ! Also they can do a diversion operation, again nothing discussed so far. Of course now there's another worry of stomach cancer occurring, just one thing after the other. But I am going to wait until I speak to the consultant before I panic.

hi, I have recently been diagnosed with bile reflux. Previous endoscopy was gastritis/ oesphagitis. The consultant said the best tablet to take was Maxalon but unfortunately I am allergic to it. He said it moves the contents out of the stomach quicker. I too have pantoprazole and famotidene, neither work. My Mother died with stomach and oesophageal cancer. Both a primary cancer, so I understand your concern. My Drs just said that’s unfortunate you can’t have Maxalon and that was how it was left.

Hi Crinkles2020

Thank you for your reply . I am allergic to Metaclopamide and Domperidone, both designed to move the contents of stomach, maybe you could ask about them ?

I take Erythromycin to help with it, been on and off them for for the last 10 years. I have also been doing some research and you can get Sucralfate which absorbs the excess bile. Also a low fat diet, which strangely enough I am on anyway as it causes me so many problems to have high fat. Still suffering with dumping syndrome. There is also a Diversion operation you can have to divert the bile from the stomach to the bowel , apparently it is an easy operation and it works. I shall be asking about that when I see the Doctor. I don’t think they realise the anxiety it causes us when we are diagnosed with these things, I’m guessing because they see it every day. With my Bi polar thrown in for good measure, I am a mess at the moment. I have suddenly developed all these symptoms, which I am sure is only the anxiety and not knowing which course I will be taking.

I hope this information helps you a little and gives a little insight into what maybe can be done for you.

I am sorry to hear about your mum, always so hard. My brother died of bladder cancer, bowel and spread everywhere, he was 62, my age this year, so even more stressed, not sure if it was hereditary though,

Take care of yourself, always here if you want to chat.

June.

hi thanks never knew about the surgery. As far as I am aware Metaclopramide is the same as Maxalon (just the brand name). I have severe reaction so can’t use them. Domperidone never worked either. Stomach issues seem hard to settle. Sorry to hear about your health as well. Thanks for reply.

I tend to read up on anything that's said tbh. The surgery came up. My surgeon wants to do a reversal by bringing my tummy back down under my ribs, but it's a big op again and I don't want it. But this is a different kind, less invasive, can be done laparotomy. Might be worth asking about Erythromycin, if you can take it. X
