Just want to know if it's common to have a hernia after having the Ivor Lewis surgery. It's been 9 years and still have stomach problems. One Dr said it appears to be a hernia and the main Dr said he doesn't know what he's taking about as it was just scaring from surgery.

I had an oesphjectomy operation 11 years ago, as a result the diaghram was incised to allow access to my oesophagus . I suffered from.a sliding hernia as a result for approx 2 years. A sliding hernia is when the bowel protruded into the chest it makes you nauseous and wretch. One day I felt ill as a result whilst in my car I stopped in a garage feeling extremely unwell, I wretched a my bowels burst into my chest restricting my breathing I started to lose my sight but managed to call 999 for an ambulance, I knew I was dying slowly the ambulance arrived and asked me what was my problem but I couldn't explain as I lost consciousnus. On arrival at hospital they didn't know what the reason for my condition was they scanned me and discovered the problem, my heart had stopped 3 times . They checked my mobile and found my wife's number and told her I was very poorly and probably would not survive the night and be prepared for the worst .I had 2 operations to correct the damage whilst in an induced coma, for 3 days. They saved my life and I am extremely fortunate thatI survived. Thanks to the ambulance crew, nurses and surgeon at Southampton general hospital .
My husband had IL op just a year ago, and was in hospital for over three months with a leak and pneumonia. He eats well, although with some reflux, and is energetic (as much as one can be in late 70s). He noticed a hernia before his 6month check with consultant, but they dont seem too concerned as he isnt in pain, and say this is not uncommon. Thank you for sharing your story - a warning to others. Do hope you continue to make good progress
hi yes it’s possible as I have had one after 9 years , the bowl gradually moves up a bit so the muscles push against the stomach wall, I am so glad that’s over well worth it . I wish you well take care .

I have a small hernia in the middle of my incision scar. My surgeon said it’s very common but as it was small there was no need to rectify it. I guess there’s a risk of rupture with most hernias, but unless they are large they tend not to repair them. Glad you recovered!
I have unfortunately had many hernias post!
hi… yes I believe so. I’ve had 3 hernia surgeries in my 5 years post IL op. IL in March 2019 then hernia surgery in May 20, June 22 and July 23
