Oesophagectomy. Pain on reflux

Hi. I had an oesophagectomy 9 years ago. I only get reflux occasionally, but when I do it is the worst pain ever. Burning like I swallowed acid. Does anyone have any advice as to what I can do when this happens because it really frightens me. I take lansoprazole last thing at night.

I had really bad reflux as well. 2 things have helped me. Always sleep on an incline (a recliner is best) and once I switched to drinking alkaline water my reflux went down 90%. It’s been amazing!

I am 5 years IL and have been taking Omeprazel 20mg 1 in the morning and 1 during dinner taking last thing at night means you have let acid build up all day so might be worth taking either morning or at during dinner if I miss I am in a lot of pain I have been taking omeprazle for 30 years and still get it wrong occasionally

I also split my Esomeprazole dose between morning and night. But I would also suggest:

- Sleep on an incline of at least 30 degrees. I use a foam wedge and pillows.

- Stop eating at least two hours before bed. If possible, switch your main meal to midday and keep your evening meal small and easily digestible, especially avoiding anything acidic, sweet or fatty.

- If you do have reflux, drink something antacid immediately (I keep Citrosoda for this purpose) then follow with Gaviscon or Gaviscon Advance (if you think you may have eaten unwisely before bed, you can also take Gaviscon before going to sleep).

- I find that plain Greek yoghourt helps to soothe the gullet the next day after an attack of acid reflux.

I hope this helps.

I have Oesophagitis, Hiatus Hernia, etc, etc, and take Lansoprazole for reflux. Have you been told specifically to take it at night? I'm afraid this goes against everything I've ever known. I take my first dose as soon as I wake up in the morning, this means it's already working before I have anything to eat. I take my second dose round about 4pm, following the same principle for my evening meal. If I stick to this regime it works great for me.One other point. The Lansoprazole I take are oro-dispersable, and carry the name of Zoton Fastabs. To my mind they work so much better as you just put one in your mouth where it dissolves. It then coats the Oesophagus on the way down, which works a treat. I would recommend these to anybody as the best way to take this medication. I take one 30mg tablet twice a day and have been doing this for years. Good luck.
