It sounds like it could be due to silent reflux (LPR). Does he take PPI's, e.g. omeprazole or lansoprazole? He may need to alter his diet to a lower fat one, e.g. avoid fried food and pastries. He could also try gaviscon, if he hasn't already. If all that fails, he should see a doctor.

Hi Ali - I’m nearly 7yrs on and get a lot of dry gagging usually associated with dumping - it’s very unpleasant - can your Dad pin point the dry gagging with anything like eating or dumping? It may be worth running it past your dad’s specialist nurse in case something needs checked - all the best

Hi AliIf you Google Dumping Sydrome you will get a better insight - it’s one of the main side effects from oesophagectomy surgery - the triggers for dumping can be quite a few things like eating to quickly - eating to much - it can be to do with sugars and also slow gastric emptying which can be a problem after surgery to - I’ve been tested twice for this but both clear so my dry gagging is just an effect of a dumping session - dumping can cause fast heartbeat, nausea, sweating, no energy, diarrhoea and sickness - the sessions usually last short periods but if your Dads not in control of it or not recognising it they could be lasting longer - I hope this helps and maybe a chat with his specialist nurse or surgery team may help x
