I am trying to support someone who has had surgery and two lots of chemotherapy for oesophageal/gastric cancer. She is not entirely happy with her care and she is hoping to get a second opinion but has been told if she finds a consultant she can be referred but she doesn’t know where to look. Has anyone got any suggestions she lives in the Essex area

Thank you

Managing expectations realistically post "New Normal" is an individual context. Clinical outcome being objective and individual acceptance of New Normal being subjective, there is a lot in between the lines.

At times counselling through GP referral helps.

Clinical major change by surgery is completed. Chemo ongoing. So all these must been dealt by a MDT and not a single consultant.

Sometimes talking to other patients, dealt with things in different timelines helps great deal. Some possibilities of past forum posts, local oesophageal meet up groups in charities. And obviously OPA patient buddy line.

I had surgery and chemo at Addenbrookes in 2014. My surgeon was Mr Richard Hardwick who is President of the Association of Upper gastrointestinal Surgeons of Great Britain. Poor bedside manner but brilliant surgeon! My consultant Oncologist was Dr Hugo Ford, a lovely man! Dr Ford is a national leader in the field of gastrointestinal cancer.

Thank you so much for your reply I will let the person I know about this. Hope you are doing well

Although I had my oesophagectomy surgery overseas, I subsequently had hernia surgery at Broomfield Hospital and can highly recommend Mr Bruno Lorenzi and Ms Neda Farhangmehr. Post-oesophagectomy hernia surgery is not simple and I had excellent care at Broomfield.
