Post op bowel problems

6 weeks post Ivor Lewis and tolerating small amounts, but normal diet.

At the weekend, I found myself severely constipated which eventually resolved. However despite no laxatives I now have frequent bouts of griping pain and diarrhoea. I wondered if this is common. Don’t get me wrong, I can cope with it and I’d definitely rather be this way than constipated.

18 months post op and still get bouts of diarrhoea the first 8 weeks or so every day but things are improving though il sometimes get 3 to 4 days in a row with bouts of diarrhoea then I'm OK for a while. I keep a food and symptom diary nut there doesn't see to be any particular food that sete me off your dietitian will be able to help you. Things do get better and you learn to live with how your new plumbing and how to read any symptoms that you get.Your doing well. Good luck for the future.

7.5 years since surgery, had the same side effects as you do. Has gotten much better but still not perfect. Small price to pay for all these bonus years!

Hi Deeedals, good to hear your doing well. I’m 4 months post IL and have had bad constipation and then times of bad cramps and diarrhoea. In recent weeks, probably about the last 3 I feel that everything is getting a bit more normal. I’m going to the toilet more regular and normal. My weight is stable and I’m eating everything I could before with the exception of tomato skins abs pasta. I’ve had a recent boost in energy too. You really will feel much better over the next couple of months. Sue xxxx

Yes, as others have said, it can be a problem. It still is for me at times, nearly 4 years past surgery, if it continues for the long term ask to see gastroenerologist . Sometimes lactose intolerance can result from surgery. I am much better on oat milk or last free. Also, I was found to have a build up of bad bacteria in the gut and I take acidophilus for this now. I tried various prebiotic foods and drinks but it is difficult to manage those as well as all the other necessary nutrition with limited capacity. You are doing well. Keep positive and remember baby steps. Don't be afraid to contact your upper g I nurse either. That's what they are there for.

Hi Deedals,It is wonderful that you are able to eat a normal diet 👍🏼! Hope you are recovering well generally.

Dumping is part of the new norm and as it is still early days from the surgery, try sitting down for 15mins after meals with a warm bottle on your tummy to see if this stops the diarrhoea from occurring too often.

Take care!

Hi,6 weeks is still early post op, but it will get better with time.

Are you spacing out between drinking and eating? May be 20mins between each. What are you eating? If it’s sugary food, then this can also cause the cramping and diarrhoea.

I am spacing my eating and drinking and I know to my cost, the perils of sugary food! It seems to have no rhyme or reason, it just happens 🤷‍♀️

I see. Then some options to possibly consider are:Have a small piece of banana before you eat (not too ripe). It will act as a way to physically slow food through your gut.

Or I know some people spray a little Imodium on their tongue before eating

Neither of above may make a difference, but it’s worth giving it a try.
