Pain killers

Hi all .

He texted me today saying that the drugs he is taking causing him lots of problems. He is on morphine, ketamine and plus others. Is that sounds normal?

He is going to be on alot of pain relief, I had my op in 2009 and reacted very badly to the morphine I was being given, hallucinating and thinking the whole world was out to get me , indeed i thought that my diagnosis from the start had been a plan to get me into hospital, disarm me and then kill me !! I even tried to hit a medic with an oxygen cylinder when i believed that he was trying to kill me - so they changed my medication to a man made alternative and all was well. It is a rough journey, the road will not be smooth but be assured you are on the right one- the other roads all lead to misery and this one eventually leads to a good life -

I had my op in February this year and I reacted in a similar way to ketomin and morphine and acused the staff and other patients of conspireing to murder me. It was a rough journey but I'm doing OK in spite of some unpleasant symptoms arising from the surgery good luck keep going you will get where you want to be soon.

Hi there, it is a worry for you but the hospital will alter change his pain relief if there are problems. Sometimes we hallucinate with morphine. I had a pump formorphine but weaned off it.

Oh thank you for your reply I am just sitting in here crying because the c.f. scan showed he had fluid in his lung and a bubble where the op done. I slept well first time last Tuesday thinking he is doing ok because all this is part of his recovery then this news. I am sorry pouring out on you like this. I don't know what to think .

Don’t be sorry for pouring out your feelings, fear because this is an excellent site to vent your emotions snd concerns. People need be they the patient or carer would live to support you with their experiences on this very difficult journey.

Keep positive for your partner, keep talking to your doctor for understanding snd don’t forget to take care of yourself too.

My husband’s epidural wasn’t done correctly immediately after the IL operation On 2/6/2020 and he was in tremendous pain for 2 hours waiting for an alternative painkiller ie ketamine and morphine.

He was hallucinating and said he was in a very ‘weird world’ while on ketamine!

Very similar experience with him as well. He said the epidural did not work properly and he was a lots of pain. Then that hallucinating and saying the world is weird .

Sorry to hear this. I think we all have very different experiences and responses to pain releif! I also see quite a few folk mentioning issues with an epidural that either failed or, at least stopped being relieving pain in patches. I had loads of issues with my epidural - stopped working about 3 days into my recovery whilst still in ICU.

To the best of my knowledge was never on Ketamin but certainly on Morphine (still have a repeat for Oral Morphine some 6 years postop). They also had me on Fentanol (which was good) and on Tramadol (which made be seriously nauseous and had to be stopped).

Post operatively I'm still experiencing significant pain in my right rib cage. Pain radiates from the location of the two lung drains inserted through my rib cage around to my sternum and up across my right shulder blade. They've damaged a few of the intracostal nerves and despite loads of attempts to resolve the pain it's not worked.

The level and location of the pain moves - speaking to others this is a common theme - so, different approaches to pain relief.

I'm taking

Pregabbalin 150mg 2x daily. Very effective but seriously hard to get off so, I'd approach with caution - I've been trying for 3 years to reduce the dosage - was at 300mg 2x daily - have been reducing in 50mg drops. But can't get below 150mg before pain comes back In sayin that it's time to try again!. I've got friends also experiencing similar difficulty getting off Pregabbalin.

Tapentadol 100mg Slow Release 2x daily. Was meant to help me off the Pregabbalin and certainly has helped.

If the pain is in my rib cage I've been using Versatis 5% topical patches on the outside of my ribs immediately above the drainage holes.

Accupuncture also helps.....

Pain never really gets below 2 or 3 out of 10 and, depending on what I've been doing nd how active I am can frequently jump to 7 or 8 out of 10 e.g. I had a poor night's sleep last night and it's almost enough to send me back to bed.

Many thanks for your reply. I will bear in mind this to move forward when he is out the hospital. It is a long term issue we need to deal and good to know about it.
