Urgent advice please re; gastroscopy throat spray

I have a severe reaction to novacaine but I'm okay with the local the dentist uses for heart patients, apparently it's the adrenaline that causes the swelling, palpitations and shakes. Just rang the endoscopy unit and no one knows if the throat spray for my gastroscopy contains adrenaline or not and the sedation is not suitable re; transport etc; The last time I had this procedure was dry, without any medication and it's not something I'd like to go through again. I would have thought the endo team would have known or had an anesthetic consultant on standby if they're sedating people. Not very confident in the skills of this team, tempted to cancel.

I have the procedure booked for Thursday does anyone out there know what throat spray they use?

i would go to the hospital tomorrow and ask the question in person, take the name and active ingredient of the one your dentist uses.. The sedation is light sedation not the same as for a full general it’s like pethidine, or the stuff that is used in date rapes. Makes you very relaxed and compliant. Find out what’s in that too. You can then cancel or they may have time to sort out transport for you for Thursday.

Thanks for the reply. I rang another hospital in the same trust and that nurse was more knowledgeable. They use Lidocaine which I was assured doesn't contain adrenaline. I'll still ask them to spray a bit on my tongue first to be sure. Not sure I'd like to be drugged up with a roofie tbh I had some weird experiences with the gas for an endoscopy the other end haha.

Hi I had the light sedation and personally would not want the spray. One of my daughters had the spray once she said it was awful. I think good advice contact hospital again explain someone must be able to find out. All good wishes x

Thanks for the reply. Had the gastroscopy yesterday and it was the worst procedure I've ever experienced, even worse than the previous endo when they did not use the spray or sedation. They really couldn't have cared less about my reaction to Novacaine or comply with my request to try a test spray on my tongue beforehand but went straight ahead and applied the Lidocaine. Luckily I didn't have a reaction and it barely had any numbing effect. I am convinced the endo nurse used to work for Dynorod the way she rammed that thing down my gizzard. Never going to that hospital again.

You poor thing so sorry to hear and hope the result turns out well and they can get you sorted. You need reassurance and put at ease any visit or procedure.

Unfortunate you will get the odd one in the medical profession have some care and empathy. Good Luck

Thanks for the reply but no such luck I'm afraid. The endo was so arrogant and cavalier she just disregarded my concerns and sprayed away. I was on the point of walking out and wished I had as she also failed to find the 1cm Barrett's diagnosed 6 years ago and removed me from the cancer pathway. I can honestly say it was the worse experience ever, I think she must have been sacked from Dynorod at some point.

Is this your first gastroscopy since the Barrett's diagnosis? In my health trust Barrett's patients are scoped every 3 years, but in others it's 2. Could the Barrett's have reversed? Presumably you've been on PPIs. Don't just leave it, do see a gastroenterologist.

Thanks for the reply. Yes it's the first scope since the Barrett's diagnosis and the first endo nurse was very thorough, took samples for the lab etc; not like Nurse Slapdash the other day.

I've trawled the internet and it's impossible for Barrett's to reverse according to WebMD and a host of other sites.

Maybe I've been touched by the hand of God but more likely the incompetence of the endo nurse is the true reason.

Six years seems a long time to leave someone with a Barrett's diagnosis. I would certainly want to have another gastroscopy in the next year or so. I have read that there is a theory tissue might grow over the Barrett's, so hiding it , but the Barrett's is still there. Best wishes.
