Hiatus Hernia : Hi I have a hiatus... - Oesophageal & Gas...
Hiatus Hernia
Hi I too have a hiatal hernia, as well as Barrett's Esophagus. It first started out with acid reflux Where I was on Ranitidine. After so many years of it progressing into what it is now I've been taken off Ranitidine and put on Pantoprazole. In addition when I can afford it I take Prilosec which helps a lot. I found Campbell's chunky chicken and dumpling or chicken pot pie soup soothes my stomach and I don't get all that avid. I've had to give up caffeinated beverages but find sometimes even plain water aggravates it. You just have to avoid high sodium, fried, salty, spicy or foods in a lot of sauce. No sodas except root beer or ginger ale. You also might wanna have your gastroenterologist run the camera down to make sure you don't have anything worse. Much luck to you.
Thank you, I will definitely get my dr to refer me to a gastroenterologist, x
And it might be the case that you should see a surgeon in case anti-reflux surgery or some other procedure can protect you from the long term affects of the reflux.
Thank you seeing dr wed

Curious about your 'username'. I keep Siberian Husky's.
I have 4 huskies and run a husky rescue lol
I have two rescues. A boy & girl. We have kept siberians for over 20 years. Our old boy knew I was ill before any human did. Constantly placing his head on my stomach (that was out of character for him). He would press on me an Oooooh Woooooh.
Hi,
Haven't read all your replies yet, only just seen this.
I have Laryngopharyngeal Reflux as well as GORD. Found out I have hiatus hernia from ENT doctor I saw with throat pain!
I take a PPI - Zoton Fastab orodispersible lansoprazole. I believe it is the best brand and had to fight to keep it. Generic's not as good.
ENT also highly recommend Gaviscon Advance medicine. I have difficulties 'fitting that in' as I also take Levothyroxine for my Thyroid conditions, which needs stomach acid to work and can't be taken within 2 hours of PPI or Gaviscon. I have just changed over to taking my Levo at night. As Gaviscon is good to take at night - after last meal and/or before bed I will have to rethink things.
I've had to ask ENT to write my doctor to tell them to put Zoton Fastab on my presription so will now get it every month.
My neighbour has lansoprazole capsules. He lost part of his oesophagus to cancer so his stomach was brought up to the remainder. However he is able to sleep almost upright on high pillows. I used to do that and my neck pain from Cervical Spondylosis / degeneration of C-spine was horrendous, couldn't cope. A GP told me to sleep as flat as possible on no more than 2 pillows.
So the therapy for one condition aggravates another. Less pillows - and Reflux and respiratory problems recurred.
The Gaviscon actually puts a coating on top of the stomach contents stopping the pepsin vapour as well as acid content rising, so protects the oesophagus & throat, according to the ENT Consultant I saw yesterday.
I first saw ENT in 2010. Was referred back urgently following 2 sleepless nights as couldn't breath properly with throat closing up at night as well as swallowing problems.
I am wondering if you have ever had your Thyroid function tested?
If you have time before seeing GP today check the last of symptoms of Underactive Thyroid on Thyroid UK and list any you have.
Ask your GP to blood test for Thyroid Antibodies TPO and Tg also FT3, FT4 and TSH.
Antibodies are important because with Hashimoto's, Thyroid function bloods (TSH & T4) can fluctuate. My came back Euthyroid ie within 'normal' range, 18 months after Hypothyroid results. I was incorrectly told 'Thyroid's OK '.
Another 18 months later (long story) I finally was diagnosed with
Hashimoto's Autoimmune Thyroiditis and Hypothyroidism.
Had an Ultrasound scan of my Thyroid following which I was referred to Endocrinologist.
