Cytosponge is the 'pill on a string' device that one swallows in a GP surgery. It is then pulled up and the sponge scrapes off samples from the lining of the oesophagus which can then be sent off for analysis.

It has the potential to screen many patients who would otherwise need a full endoscopy and may be a key way of dealing with the workload faced by endoscopy units when many more people need checking for persistent heartburn.
