Flu jab

I've just been told by my surgery that I am not entitled to a free jab. I had my Ivor Lewis in July 2012 with chemo before the op. I am 64 and have had free jabs for the last two years. I'm not bothered about the money 😎 but wondered what the experiences of others on the site may have been?

Best wishes

My own surgery were happy for me to have the 'flu jab because of my history with lung problems / cough / prolonged weakness after surgery. I was 53 then, and now I get them because of being over 65, but once I started to have them it was automatic.

My husband aged 80 had his op nearly 4 years ago. No problems about getting a flu jab, he's had one every year since.

Perhaps the receptionist at your surgery has made a mistake. I was told everyone with a serious illness got a free flu jab. My granddaughter aged 25 has asthma and she's just had one. Can you ask your doc instead of the receptionist?

Thank you all for your comments.

It's a bit of a long story but the decision has been made by my GP who I probably haven't seen for over two years. I'm seeing my surgeon for a check up soon so I will seek his opinion. It's the principle of the thing which concerns me. There may be others more vulnerable than me who are missing out and who might think twice about getting the jab due to the cost.

Best wishes

Hi Martin, I have had a flu jab every year since my surgery in 2010 on the advice of my GP. I found the flu clinic a bit of a free for all, so I asked my local pharmacy if I could have the flu jab there, and due to my history were happy to oblige. So why not ask there?

Good luck

Hi Danko

I was offered a flu jab soon after my surgery. You can get them if you are young, pensionable or considered to be in a "at risk" category (which you are). I would have a chat with your doctor again - I'm sure it's just an admin error. My doctors were quite insistent I got one.

BTW - you could also be at risk to pneumonia and you can get a jab for that (FoC) at the same time

I do know that some surgeries await for you to contact them

Good luck

I have had free 'flu jabs since my diagnosis and operation in 2013 (I was 61) at my GP's surgery. My partner, Greg (53), was also able to get a free jab, as at the time he was my carer. Consider the pneumonia jab as well. You really should not have to push for these things! Good luck.....Angi xx
