Treating OCD

Hey all, I'm 18 years old and OCD has been affecting my life for a while, and it's getting worse. I've been on fluoxetine for two weeks now but it hasn't taken effect yet and has made me quite depressed and anxious. Thinking about putting up with this feeling makes me anxious to think about. Any advice on how everyone else has handled OCD and treated it? Thanks!

Hi Bobbi3.

It's such a horrid illness, it literally takes over your life. I had OCD for 32 yrs. I hid it at the beginning, but sometimes couldn't as it would take over. I had CBT. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. I only had that this year but it has changed my life! I still get the urges to check things, but can sometimes only check once now, instead of hundreds of times! And the feeling of utter dread has gone. I do get the odd bit still, when I'm particularly stressed, but 95% better!

It basically works by having a one to one session with a trained professional, who makes you look at what focuses your OCD. Ways to deal with it. And to understand why it happens. I found it really helpful, but some people don't. Ask your G.P. They will refer you . I had twelve 45 min sessions. If after your time, you feel you need more, you can always ring to arrange for more sessions. Unfortunately mine was through lockdown, so it was all done on the phone! It still was hugely beneficial though. I wish you all the best and hope you get some help soon. I'm always here if you need a chat. Take care. Anna 😁
