Hi madchoc16
It's so sad, but it seems to be the case here in Liverpool too. A lengthy wait for cbt, the way it's delivered and who its delivered by can be very disheartening in some cases.
I'm new to knowing its ocd I've been suffering with for so long but know I'm going to have to fight for help. Helping each other out on communities like this is so important and driven by real concern, love and empathy.
It's such a problem in many places. The NHS is underfunded, and mental health is particularly badly affected.
Having OCD is no picnic, and it's still thought of as not a proper illness by many people.
Treatment on the NHS is worth waiting for, however, as when you get it, it's generally very good. Meanwhile there is a lot you can do to help yourself. Getting one or two self help books is one way, though you might already be doing this. I have been helped by Overcoming Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and The OCD Workbook, but there are quite a few other good ones. They aren't a complete replacement for proper clinical therapy, but they can supplement it and help you while you're waiting for treatment.
Keep going!
I have also been struggling with OCD for over thirty years. My main obsession is contamination. I’m sorry to hear how difficult it is to get help in the UK. It isn’t as difficult here in the US so I can’t use that as an excuse. I’m just now SLOWLY trying to work on my OCD. In the past I’ve always just lived around it but now that I am getting older I am tired of having to live and feel like this. I want to be able to enjoy the rest of my life without OCD interfering so much. I know I have to be stronger to practice facing my fears but I have found tremendous help from reading as much as I can. Reading and doing are two separate things I know so I have to really put more effort into it. Anyway, you are not alone and I would love to talk to you more re your contamination fears. This forum is great also- everyone is so supportive.
I hope you find the help you are needing.
Thanks everyone for your replies, xx
