Living with OCD for over 10 years.

Hi everyone. I joined the fibro group on this site and having a look through I found one regarding OCD.

I have had OCD for well over 10 years. I think been in a very bad marrage. There was a lot of domestic abuse mental violent. Was told 8 yeas ago by gp that yes OCD had its nasty hold on me. I wont go into details as you will all know what it does to you.

The last 4 years I have had to stop work due to ill health and was told in December I have fibromyalgia. Now this might sound silly but when im having abad day and I cannot do any cleaning even if I cant shower in the morning. I pick my head until it bleeds causing sores and bald patches. I wont stop until there is blood. My gp as said its self harming basiclly because im unable to do things I take it out on myself. Just wondering if anyone out there has gone through this or going through it. Nan xx

Hello Nan..I am sorry to read that you have suffered such a terrible marriage..No one should ever live with any kind of abuse..

I know any emotional trauma will have an affect on health, both physical and mental.. I truly hope that you are out of that situation now so that you can start to heal..You deserve to be treated with love, kindness and respect always.

I too have fibromyalgia-and other conditions-and any stress can make the symptoms of fibro flare -up with muscle pain/tenderness, headaches and debilitating fatigue exasperated. There are often numerous other symptoms depending on its severity...

Relaxation for body and mind -such as meditation and simple deep breathing techniques- and a stress -free life!. is definitely the key to reducing the pain of fibro which can often trigger migraines and chronic illness..Find out all you can about it to help yourself and what works for you.

I have ocd-symetry/perfectionism-and I live with my son who has -fear of contamination- ocd..He also has ME and other health condition..We are always working to reduce the impact ocd has on our lives

OCD seems to grab hold of us and won't let go. It tricks us into doing things which we falsely believe we have to do in order to reduce our feelings of anxiety. But each time we do the action we are urged to do -this is a compulsion- we only feel worse in the long run, and the more we do it the more of a hold ocd has over us, and so we have to learn to break the cycle..

Because it is our mental health, we must retrain our brain into not doing these compulsions..,(A good book is Brain Lock off Amazon)..It isn't easy because 'the enemy' ocd doesn't want to let go, so you have to be strong and learn all that you can to fight it..and you can and will fight it!..

The ocd you describe sounds like it could be Trichotillomania and you can find out about this and get help and support on mind.org.uk also ocdaction.org.uk and ocduk.org trichotillomania.co.uk

You can also ask your GP for CBT-cognitive behaviour therapy-this is a talking therapy which aims to help you to change the way you think and behave to help you deal with the problems. (retraining your brain)

I hope some of this helps. Good luck🙂 Please contact me if you think I can be of any help with anything.x
